Which boxers were most effective at closing the distance or cutting off the ring against longer, mobile opponents who were committed to maintaining distance and fighting from the outside? What are the most exemplary individual performances?

I would say Tyson was a master at closing the distance.
I think most of his opponents had the goal of being mobile, long, and keeping a distance.
And he did a great job at taking that away from them at the opening bell.

His peek-a-boo style was tailor made to have such capabilities.
I don't think there has ever been a fighter with a style as specialized for closing the distance against such fighters.

Foreman was pretty good, especially for a guy that size. Believe it was Ali that said he was surprised how easily George cut him off, so rather than dancing reverted tu the rope adope.

    Frazier. See Ali 1-3.

Jung Koo Chang. See the 1st and especially 2nd Zapata fights.

I'm trying to think of guys who were stocky. Jeff Fenech put as much pressure on as anybody but he was a big guy. Same with zarate.

Chavez and Duran have some obvious performances. Duran against Buchanan and Chavez has a bunch. The most mobile guy he chased down was Camacho and the longest was either hernandez or kamau. For combo maybe mitchell.

Azumah Nelson kept a splendid pressure on Wilfredo Gomez. Caught up to him in the eleventh. Joe Frazier did a matchless job of pinning Ali in FOTC. People have run from Roman Gonzalez his whole career. He excels at walking them down and squeezing their room. Gennaday Golovkin. Sandy Saddler took none of Pep's ****.

Chavez sr. was a master cutting ring off, so was Arguello, J.Frazier, before/during "fight of the century". A lot of the Mexican fighters seemed to be born with it, like that left hook to the liver.

And that, I think, was his main key to victory.

However, I think 71 Ali had lost a step or two from 66/67 Ali. The earlier version would have been a bit more elusive and I think that would have made for less favourable result for Joe.

I thought that Julio Cesar Chavez, Senior was easy to hit, but his ability to cut off the ring and make his punches count was tremendous.

Before reading any responses the first name to immediately pop in to my head was

Julio Caesar Chavez, always hunting, stalking and cutting down that ring. He'd find you!

Tyson and Frazier were two of the better to do it at heavyweight.
