I think there was more emphasis on Byrd causing the injury with his fighting style by making Vitali punch close up.

it would have gone bad for the Klitschkos if BOTH giant superHW brothers got stopped and exposed by a former middleweight. One was bad enough. Both would have confirmed a sub-eurolevel status.

No , he was shot to bits . Thats what was wrong with him. He never had good legs to begin with cos of the excess bulk. At this point in time he could do nothing more than just stand there dead centre of the ring and block punches with his face.

Embarrassing title fight and the fact it started Wlads reign tells you all you need to know about the era.

I have talked to chris about this when we all met for the opening of the klitschko movie. Chris said basically that no way was he going to out box Wlad (like he tried 1st fight) so they decided to just take it to him, get wlad tired but that didn't work either

I suspect he believes that a fatter person than byrd would not feel his power, on account of his having more fat.

Because he was listening to his wife who was shouting at him to KO Wlad
    from the ringside.

Yeah, both E. Steward and Wladimir knew it too. Fight was like a foregone conclusion.

I was so glad seeing him get destroyed, since the Oquendo debacle was still fresh at around that time.

    Good post.

I still remember that era and how much lack of respect Wlad used to receive. Back then he was simply seen as Vitali's younger brother.

I can understand why Byrd expected to walk him down.

    Nothing embarrassing about it really.

Byrd was the number 1 ranked HW by every publication, there is literally no better fight for Wlad to have targeted.

Thats says it all about the state of the landscape at the time.

Manny Stewart claimed Byrd wasn't good enough to be a sparring partner during the Lewis era. And he was prime back then. Byrd was finished in 2006. Proof of that was in the MaCline and Williamsom fights and against a way past prime Golota in which he got the draw but clearly lost.
