Manny Pacquiao is the Greatest Southpaw of All Time.

I think for me it's just the main way I understand how great a certain boxer is, seeing where he fits amongst others and I just categorise them accordingly. I agree, it doesn't really mean much but I think it's an entertaining (pointless, but entertaining) discussion - that's probably why I write about it (and to get a few *****'s mad from time to time, which makes it more entertaining).
At the end of the day, Pac isn't going to pass my exams or give me a penny so he's not that important.

 

Like you, I think it's important to distinguish the difference between "greater" and "better".

 

Manny Pacquiao is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Of the reasons for Manny's effectiveness, happening to be a lefty is pretty low down the list. I feel like you could alter that one aspect to make him orthodox and leave all else about him the same and his career pans out more or less exactly as it did.

His physical gifts of speed & stamina under high volume were far more integral to his success, and his burst attacks were generally straightforward enough that he could have been doing the same bunny hop inside to unload his straight combos with the other stance, without it making a bit of difference to whether or not his opponents were overwhelmed by him.

 

Plus, defensively it wasn't like he used being a southpaw to make himself more difficult to land on. He just had quick feet.

If anything you could say being a southpaw left him more susceptible to right hand counters (obviously).

 

Whitaker is great, but manny pac is certainly greater. His height in boxing accomplishments might not be equal in decades.
As previously posted, h2h is arguable. But resume and accolades are not.

 

Tiger had to fight 2 times a month by the end of his career. Manny can barely squeeze out a fight with anyone that can put a dent in a pillow at this point. Its embarrassing. Pac-Man is a legend amongst legends but he is on the road of ruin along with Jones Jr., Hopkins, Toney and Ray Leonard when it comes to hanging em up on a high note.

 

Interesting post. Do you think that Pacquiaos weird punches from weird angles were made even stranger because he was southpaw?

 

Pacquiao dominated guys who relied in left hands. Barrera for example had a good right, but his left was an important weapon for him. When Pac took that away by moving to his left it made it difficult for Barrera to summon an offensive attack.

 

Whitaker was certainly a talented fighter. His defense was special. Usually guys like him can't sustain a solid workrate because they're afraid of getting hit. Pea could throw punches without getting hit. A rare talent.

 

Pacquiao hasn't declined to that point yet. He's still a top 5 man in his division.

The difference is he wasnt fighting fighters with none or next to no losses at world level with a 3 month training camp behind them.
How can anyone look at mannys list of opponents over the past 10 years and the manner in which he fought them and be in anything but awe ?
