I went into Arrival with the proper expectations, I was expecting a slow, cerebral and methodical tone similar to Sicario or Prisoners from Villanueve, so maybe that's why I enjoyed it as much as I did. I had high hopes for Hacksaw in spite of its hokey looking trailer, Mel is a beast and always delivers, so while I was expecting some sentimentality that's fine with me as an a fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood, but for others who are wary, its not overkill in that department, and Garfield's performance is sincere and by far his best work as an actor.

I was expecting it to be slow... i just was kinda hoping for more complexity. I found it to be a bit pseudocerebral and also had so much unfulfilled potential. Just my opinion though... dont get me wrong, i liked it... just felt its cerebalness got overrated. The more I think of it and the more i accept it for what it was and not what i wanted it to be the more appreciation I have for it though.

Hacksaw did seem a bit hokey to me (good way to put it) but man its story is so good and its action such a powerful representation of the living hell they were in its still just an awesome war flick. The guy is heroic personified. And you're right... Mel is a damn beast lol.

Oh yeah, it was completely pseudointellectual, but that's about as much as we can probably hope for at this point, maybe I've lowered my bar recently, but the reality is, there are no Malick's, Kubrick's, Bunuel's, Herzog's anymore. It was about as cerebral as the average Nolan film but without leaping through all the hoops in an attempt to confuse people trying to show how smart he thinks he is. Aside from going in with lowered expectations I basically had the same reaction as you did, I saw it almost 2 weeks ago at this point, and I thought it tried too hard, but I accepted it for what it was, and like you my appreciation has grown over the last week or so.

I feel almost the exact opposite where Floyd is Pernell Lite, and as long as it was judged fairly I'd say 117-110/116-112 Whitaker. Whitaker is top 25 all time imo, Mayweather is not.
