WITHOUT hindsight, when ( in real time) was the first time where you genuinely wanted Ali to walk away from boxing for good ?

    As it happened/was happening
    Without the benefit of hindsight.

The first signs of Parkinson began to manifest at that time ..
It was a crime that Ali was allowed to fight another 3 times (including a teriffic beating by Larry Holmes) after Spinks I.

I wasn't even alive during Ali's career but from a legacy standpoint I always thought Ali should have retired after the Foreman fight. He had the credentials to be ranked number 1 heavyweight of all time after that.

With out hindsight I think about time of the first spinks ft. Here was a kid really with I think 7 fights beating the man who was regarded even at that time as a legend. It held a big mirror up or should have to how far ali was gone. This was a big fat message shouting at ali.. Your best day s are gone, call it quits... But of course a lot of people around ali didn't want him looking in the mirror. Sad

After he beat George Foreman I was overjoyed and thought to myself that he'd nothing more to prove. It was Manila, though, when I started to wish he'd pack it in. If only he did,eh ? Every fight after that his deterioration became more and more apparent. I was happy after the second Spinks fight because I actually believed him when he said "That's it....I've finished" We,and he,should have been spared the misery of those last two terrible bouts.

He was sat by a pool with dark glasses on the day after. He was pointing at the camera saying 'I will be back'. His speech was heavy tongued and slurred.

Ferdi Pacheco his physician and cornerman had been telling Ali that his speech was slurred and advising him to quit years before Ali fought Spinks.

    BTW
I thought he should quit when he lost to Norton and had to be leaning on the ropes and taking brutal punishment in order to pull off a win.

The Foreman fight. Ali won the Fight, but lost the long-term War.
