i saw his fight with weaver again yesterday. That guy had everything he needed to be HW champion of the world, handspeed legs bigtime power great jab.
If ruddock had actually kept or even improved his boxing skills from early on in addition to his big power shots, tyson could have never beaten him, he could have beaten holyfield as well. 6'3" 230 HW with very long arms, handspeed legs and POWER.
Instead he developed a bizarre style where he loaded up on maybe 25 huge shots a round, most of them left hook/uppercuts. What i dont understand is that after 2 punishing losses to tyson why wouldnt he change things up?? He knew how to box!! atleast after the lewis loss i thought he would have learned but NO.

Floyd Patterson trained him for a while but walked away ,he said he couldn't get him to work behind his jab, he just wanted to throw his smash all the time and, as you know when you are only looking to avoid one punch it gets pretty predictable, especially as it wasnt a short one like for example Frazier's hook.

I know! And ruddock's "smash" was SO hard that it worked to some level. I've seen some of the recent interviews from ruddock, he's not a dumb guy, maybe deluded about his skills at 50 years old but he isnt stupid so i dont get why he never used his boxing skills

Naz was similar in some ways. If he'd stuck to the basics in some fight s and not tried knocking every one out he could have had a easier time. He went to blast out Kevin Kelly and ended up on his ass. I even think the Mab Fight loss was due to him doing this and when he realised that wasn't going to happen he got soundly out pointed. But in the short term like razor, it does make for a more exciting fighter.

atleast the prince used both hands, and to me there always seemed to be a method to his madness. If you watch ruddock fight it makes you wonder if he's severely mentally ******ed and they just got around to teaching him the left hook. but no the guy was smart and articulate and knew how to box at one point in his career

Gerald McCellan beat Roy Jones as amatuer. Before his tragic fight with Benn his last 14
fights had included 10 first round ko including 3 straight in title defenses. Was a
ko machine who had skills but just got carried away with ko with no backup strategy
if his opponent could survive his early deadly ambush.

Ha ha I no what u mean though with ruddock. I think he was a bit of a case, when he got knocked down he would sometimes jump up with a bit grin on his face, looked a bit crazy. Though I don't recall him laughing when Lewis blasted him to the canvas. Perhaps he forgot?!!!

Benn in the early days was ko crazy. The defence and jab went out of the window with early Nigel. He was a absolute crazy wild swinging machine.. Until Watson showed him a few lessons..

Naz was a mess in that Barrera fight, the whole build up everything, he underestimated Barrera and paid the price sadly. The Prince that fought Kevin Kelley would've gave Barrera a hell of a fight, Kelley had never seen anything like it

Thought the same for a long time.about Ruddock went power mad after the Dokes fight made him very one dimensional .perhaps he got lazy in training?.happens to other fighters naz has been mentioned and McClellan also Honeygan did similar in his latter fights.

    Great Ruddock interview right here

He talks a little about how his younger years in boxing, he was an aggressive lion.
And it wasn't until he got older than he understood the mechanics, and fought more like an artist.

Ironically Lewis himself is a good example of this after his knockout of ruddock. He started loading up on the right hand far more in his fight with tucker in particular, and this trait led to his downfall against McCall.

You could arguably trace this back to his one punch finish of weaver, but the hype and impact of the demolition job of razor seemed to convince him that the big right was his trump card. If you study the ruddock fight though his jab and movement had already frustrated razor to create the opening.
