I always wondered if it was something the referee said about clinching/wrestling going into the fight. Because you would have expected Wilalrd to lean and maul and he doesn't do any of that, just holds, then spreads his arms and looks at the referee.
Both at their absolute peak Dempsey....as great as Langford obviously was I'm not sure what he was better at than Dempsey...perhaps countering...if they fought 10 times Dempsey would get 7 or 8 wins
Langford stated Dempsey was "the greatest fighter he had ever seen". I think that says plenty. At their both respective bests Dempsey would probably win by early KO. I don't see anything Langford could do that would allow him to survive an all out Dempsey assault.
I think you are mistaken. Dempsey wasn't doing well at all and fell behind. The July 1964 issue of Boxing Illustrated had an article about the Dempsey-Brennan fight titled "Dempsey's Toughest Fight: It wasn't with Firpo—it was with Bill Brennan." >>> Brennan wasn't a top notch fighter. Yet some consider it Dempsey's toughest fight?
You can find whatever you would like to find within the thousands upon thousands of articles written over the years. It does not make it the truth.
I was going by a combination of the roughly 11 minutes of fight footage along with the "Quebec Telegraph" newspaper article from the day after the fight. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1923&dat=19201215&id=7pEfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=MtQEAAAAIBAJ&pg=1699,2568681&hl=en
Not all one sided I'm leaning towards. Langford puts on a good display of boxing for the first 4 or 5 round s. Clinches coming from Langford and slowing Jack down, he's unable to get his punches off as well as he wants. But then he starts getting through to the body which visibly hurt s Langford. Jack's well in to his stride by the 7th, he's slightly behind here, when suddenly Jack cracked a left to the body and a right to the head. Langford is down! He attempts to get up but the body shots done the damage. He gets counted out and Jack immediately runs over to help him to his feet. Jack has a Bleeding mouth but smile s through the blood praising Langford as a tough opponent. Game over.
Provide evidence to the contrary, and read the article before commenting! Brennan gave Dempsey some trouble. Langford in his prime would be Dempsey's best opponent. Or you can argue Tunney and we know how that went down. Without the low blow foul and hook to the jaw when Sharkey was complaining to the ref, Dempsey likely loses that match.
This is Bull Sh*T Dempsey was comfortably in the lead and would have won a unanimous decision had it gone the distance, ringside reporters only gave Brennan 2 rds!
More Bull Sh*t this is a fairy tale promoted by that king of the Bull Sh*tters ,[next to you ,]Bert Sugar. It's total cack. Dempsey turned down a fight with Langford in early1917 because he sensibly knew he wasn't ready for such opposition, at that time Jack weighed under 170lbs.
The three preceding right uppercuts landed by Dempsey on Sharkeys stomach prior to the ko blow were not low. I count Dempsey leading 9 rounds to 2 prior to the Ko of Brennan. As mentioned you can find an article to back up any argument. Amateur time.
It can rather easily be argued that Langford has a deeper win ledger at heavyweight than Dempsey... Wills McVea Gunboat Smith Jeff Clark Joe Jeanette Jim Flynn Jim Johnson John Lester Johnson
Its a position you can reasonably take, just as you can point out that Langford lost to Wills 11times,Smith once,Flynn once,McVey twice,Jeannette twice, Bill Tate 3 times, and Fred Fulton 2 out of 2.
I always look to experts from that time since they had the luxury of watching the fighters fight live and in person. Fleischer who gave Langford great praise not only rated Dempsey over Langford all time but felt Jack would stop Sam early.
