The welterweight unification airs live on CBS from 9pm EST, with Erickson Lubin vs. Jorge Cota set as the co-feature in a WBC light middleweight semi-final eliminator. As of now there are no plans for the rest of the card to be televised or streamed anywhere, in case anybody was hoping to catch Andrzej Fonfara vs. Chad Dawson on Sho Extreme or CBS Sports Network. Best case scenario, per Dan Rafael, is that Lubin vs. Cota ends very quickly, which should then result in Fonfara vs. Dawson being shown on tape-delay. Lubin does have front-runner pop in the early going, and Cota has been dropped in the first round (by Ernesto "Güero (aka Blondie" Gamez, a low-level Mexican welterweight domestic journeyman) so there's hope...although it took Veneno Rubio a full six rounds and change to batter Cota into submission in his sole professional defeat to date..
Is the winner automatically the best at 147lbs, or do they need the Pacquiao vs. Khan winner to cement that?
Even though I'm a fan of Philly boxers I'll go with Thurman by KO. DSG is solid but he's due to get KTFO. This will be One Time and One Time only folks
Errol Spence or Kell Brook appear to be the consensus best welterweight (which I don't agree with), but yeah, I think the winner needs to face the winner of Pacquiao-Khan to become the #1.
Brook vs Spence also has a good shout. I feel the winner of Garcia/Thurman should fight the winner of Brook/Spence.
They need to beat Pacman to be called the best at 147. I'd love to see the winner of DSG/Thurman fight the winner of Brook/Spence. Pac seems to be on a retirement tour. Him and Koncz said that they want his next fight after Khan to take place in the Philippines.
So we are still perhaps most of 2017 - if not part of 2018 - away from dubbing anyone the clear successor to Mayweather as the undisputed king of welters? Garcia vs. Thurman Spence vs. Brook Pacquiao vs. Khan With the winner from any of those going on to beat the winners of the other two before his sovereignty is universally accepted?
The winner automatically the best at 147lbs . Maybe top 5 P4P too. Is CBS a free to air channel? This fight is more deserving of PPV than GGG vs Jacobs imo. And definitely more deserving than the scrapped Cotto - Kirkland PPV.
Yes, free to air and one of the "big three" domestic networks here. Boxing just returned to CBS for the first time in 4 decades last year.
