Read an interview where he said if he could do it again he would never trust his manager Newman. What is it that Newman did that bothers riddick? Did Newman steal from him? Newman seemed to care about bowe, orchestrating "let's go bowe" chants from ringside, tag teaming Elijah tillery, beating the crap out of the fan man, that's not something a manager does who isn't emotionally invested. I even remember the HBO commentator saying that no one wanted to give bowe a chane after his dissappointing Olympics performance but Newman did oral merging like that. What exactly happened?

When Bowe's money ran dry ( he was paying all the bills and rents for his wider family) he tried to blame Newman and said he'd not paid him all he should have.
Apparantly ,everything was looked into and all Newmans' dealings regarding Bowe, were found to be on the level.
Bowe's life and finances went out of control and he tried to put part of the blame on Newman.
Bowe's decline was fast and very sad.

I feel bad for Bowe, i was never a fan but the financial, mental, speech and family trouble is not something i'd wish on anyone. tyson and holyfield are broke as well but they atleast have most of their faculties and are close to their families

I was trying to find out about this very subject just the other day after watching Bowe on youtube complain about his promoter. There isn't much online about Rock Newman it seems.
I read a post on here that expained that despite his reputation, Don King fighters made significantly more $$$$ with him than without - Perhaps Bowe should have gone with the Don. It must be frustrating to look back on his career and realise how much money he left on the table by retiring so early and not fighting Lewis/Tyson, Having said that, the way boxers tend to blow their fortunes he probably ends up broke anyway.

The **** seemed to hit the fan when bowe won /lost to golata. I think there were rumblings going on before then that things weren't great. But after golata bowe just lost it. Joining the marines then leaving after 3 days or something, fighting with his sister, kidnapping his wife. Even if rock was standing by bowe during this period he still wouldn't have been able to do much.

I totally agree, he really lost the plot and lost everything. Ended up kidnaping his own wife and kids or something ?
Last i heard some guy has put up the money to open a small eatery using Bowes' name and fame as a draw. Bowe has some share in it.
I hope something works out for him.
Its scary how these guys couldn't see how it was gonna end up if they carried on spending. I guess they all get carried away with their fame and start to panic about the money when they realise its running dry.

Newman has nothing to do with boxing now. I think he really looked out for Bowe and encouraged him to retire after Golota for the sake of his health.
He thought Bowe was wealthy enough to be ok.
Bowe was financing his wider family on an industrial scale.
A manager can only do so much. I think Newman is nothing to do with Bowe's demise.

I just read another article in which Newman bought $300k worth of tickets for the J. Ferguson fight out of his own pocket, that doesn't seem like the kind of thing a greedy manager would do. Another article on Bowe tells how he is set up for life after making ' conservative investments '

Check out the Boxing Archives thread by ' juppity ' - a real goldmine of past articles, there are 3 on Bowe and even 1 on Newman.

Just speculating but IMV if your manager doesn't believe in you and advises you to dodge your rival that can`t give a fighter confidence. Had Newman managed Bowe differently things may have worked out better. In the long run Riddick lost interest and ate himself out of contention. It`s his own fault because he was a grown man but he`s not the first fighter to be protected to the extreme {Gerry Cooney} they lose their belief in themselves. Just my opinion.

Being a boxer is such an abnormal occupation. You are the product. And in training, you kind of have to shut off your mind to focus on the tasks at hand. It's a very tunnel visioned mentality. All you think about are visualizations of fighting people. It takes up a lot of your mental resources.

I give all the praise in the world to boxers who intelligently manage their lives and their finances despite the nature of the job.

Maybe because people to this day still ask him why he didn't fight Lewis back in 93 and say that could have been the definitive fight in his career, that he now regrets that he never went through with it and blames Newman for it?

Ive never seen anything retrospectively written about that.
At the time both camps blamed one another.

This is why I miss the numerous boxing mags that were around before the internet became the centre of the universe.

I'm guessing maybe because the Lennox Lewis fight never happened. Also Newman tended to set Bowe up for easy fights. Which hurts Bowe's legacy.

Me too...I was a devotee of The Ring(when it was a great mag), KO, Boxing Illustrated(especially)....I'd haunt the magazine stores and news stands and snap up all these mags.
