I did´t understand why they made this fight at the first place. For a fan perspective, this was pure gold on paper and in reality, but both guys had better odds (less risk, similar award) against other top 10 fighters than fighting each other (Stevens would have better odds against Monroe jr, Saunders, Derevyanchenko, Sulecki, Heiland, Korobov). There was a risk getting KOed, but they still took it. Respect for both fighters for taking this fight.

That said, Lemieux is #2 MW in the world. If we want to see relevant, non-golovkin middleweight fight, you need to have Lemieux on the other corner. I´m afraid only Derevyanchenko and Sulecki are brave enough to fight him.

 

Lemmy reminds me slightly of Julian Jackson, amazing power but limited boxing skills but amazing hearts. I think JJ had the slight power edge though, saying that I feel Lemmy has improved greatly since the GGG fight . He would like a re match with GGG but thats out as he has no belt, Saunders is being courted by Alvarez to get more leverage for the future GGG fight & GGG will be chasing BJS too, so catch 22 for Lemmy. He should fight Jacobs if Jacobs lasts with GGG, by that I mean if Jacobs does well against GGG, as I dont think Jacobs will win.

Lemmy would learn a lot from Jacobs but TBH I think he would lose to Jacobs & BJS, they are IMO, to skillful for him right now, to be fair, probably always will be. As for a Re match with GGG he might get lucky as GGG is always in the pocket.

 

Just watched the fights. Gamboa's footwork is beautiful. Alvarado was the perfect opponent for getting rid of the ring rust. Defensively overall he was sound and should've fought Crawford more like this (although he didn't have enough power to hurt someone as big as Crawford).
Let's see him in with a contender before he goes for Lomachenko, but that's a fight I'll love to see. Elite skills.

Lemieux vs Stevens is the sort of fight boxing needs more of. Two fighters with bad intentions ready to leave everything behind in the ring. It made up for the uneventful Gamboa fight which left people restless.
I wouldn't go as far as Kellerman did, saying it was one of the biggest KO's ever but it was exquisite and when you choose to fight a huge MW in Lemieux, be ready for PAIN. GGG knew this and surgically used his jab - a great performance by GGG in hindsight.

Stevens committed some sins for that KO:
1. Hooking with a bigger puncher whilst -
a. Being completely square
b. Not keeping his right hand up to block the hook
c. Throwing the hook which is less coordinated where power is concerned - Stevens didn't have enough momentum going into the punch, he used elbow momentum a lot and it was a little slappy almost, compared to Lemieux who was rooted in his feet, used his torso as much as he could've in that tight position, and landed right on the button.

 

Canelo would get bodied badly by Lemmy.

I have no doubt in my mind that Lemmy would blow through him. Fight is all wrong for him. For the money he makes , Canelo is a cherry picking disgrace .

 

i dont disagree with your assesment.....at the same time i have to look at lemieux in a different light....some might say hes growing and improving as a fighter....and he might be.....but im not entirely sure until i see it against an A level guy

ive seen him beaten by golovkin....come back to fight a 154 guy in tapia that was stopped in his previous fight(also a 154 outing)...then beat a guy i consider C level......probably alot of guys would consider stevens B level but i cant really.....

id like to see lemieux in there against a skilled guy that can make him miss and move a bit...and see how lemieuxs stamina holds up

 

Canelo would have to be careful in that fight.

Some people have it down as a demolition job / domination by Lemieux, because of the KDs - but that's an artifact of NDNJs reliance on movement instead of a proper defence (as well, of course as Lemioeuxs power) and his tendency to get dragged into firefights he doesn't need to. What is more telling is that David fairly clearly lost the second half of the fight, and 5 or 6 rounds (in total) per the judges. David definitely still has work to do on his pacing and maybe stamina, and yes, he can be outboxed. Nonetheless, I like Lemieux, and still regard him as amongst the top guys in the division.

 

oh no question...lemieux is fun to watch....and def one of the top guys in the division....maybe as high as number 2.....but like you said...there are some flaws that A level guys can expose and beat him....to me, beating curtis stevens, doesnt make him someone new....stevens is a ko waiting to happen against a guy like lemieux and doesnt really tell us if lemiuex has improved in the areas he would need to
