Very much so. There was at the time a lot of criticism against bruno, not putting up a fight and been terrified. But that tyson had already beaten Frank, he was confident and I think eager to get that fight out of the way. He put on a very good performance in that one which was helped by Bruno literally clinging on for life. The general census at the time was tyson was back to his old self. Then the seldon fight reinforced that view, even though Bruce practically dived to the floor. No wonder no one gave holyfield a chance.
At the end of the day tyson beat Bruno in a dominant manner. Yes he may have been off with his timing and not been the force he was but remember, Bruno in the first fight also had a different mind set. Despite been nervous as hell he channelled that into aggression. He tried in the first fight to actually hurt tyson and to a degree he did. But the second fight I believe Bruno s mind was some place elsewhere. He was starting to show the signs of mental health problems I believe in the mccall fight , by the time of the tyson match his confidence would have been low and he also had the extra weight on his shoulders of been the defending champion. A whole lot different from the first fight. Tyson imo had a good performance because Bruno couldn't fight back due to the pressure in his mind which takes its toll on the body. There's a lot to be said for a fighter s mental outlook in any fight never mind one against a guy like tyson.
Good points. If Frank had had the same mindset that he had in his first fight with Tyson, having a good go,he may indeed have won the return. Because Bruno froze like a statue from the first bell onwards in the 1996 return,Mike looked a lot better than he actually was. I agree that up until Ear-Gate,Tyson's best post-prison performance was Holyfield II.
Bruno loses 10 times outta 10. Nothing in that 3 round demolition job suggests he'd ever have a chance of winning. Once Lane forced him to stop hugging with the threat of a DQ he got bombed out.. A braver Bruno suffers a first round stoppage loss opposed to a 3rd round one.
All things considered, probably the first Holyfield fight. It was a fairly one-sided beatdown but he hung in there, against a quality fighter. He could have bettered that performance in the rematch (he was technically/physically better for 2 1/2 rounds) but had a mental melt-down.
Personally agree with stevie g. I m sure bruno crossed himself about 30 times walking to the ring. His mind was all over the place that nite. Would have fancied a prime bruno to beat that version of tyson. if his mind was right for it anyway. Tyson just relied on his power to get him out a jam against an opponent that did basically freeze. Actually think bruno did start warming to the task initially...just didnt have any sort of belief that nite. And let the small belief he did have...get punched out of him. I think tyson would have slowed down considerably in the next few rounds if bruno could have kept in there. He was mainly just winging bombs. Wasnt much boxing getting done in there. Jab neglected in favour of every punch being a big shot. Brunos mind just wasnt on it enough to capitalise. Get a feeling tyson went for early nights cause he knew he wouldnt last at a high pace for long before slowing at that stage in his career. With his first career his knockouts came a lot more naturally. He started trying to force them too much in his second career. On the surface looked a good enough performance. No ones complaining about knocking a world champion out in three rounds and because we didnt see it go later...its hard to take much negative against tyson. But if you look at it close enough...its hardly surprising holyfield beat him.
Hindsight is 20/20, nobody watched Bruno 2 and Holyfield/Czyz and concluded such a thing. Anyone picking Holyfield, like my father, did so on a hunch that Evander had developed a master strategy from years of observing Mike at all his fights.
From my understanding this Mongoose was banned and for him to return would be in violation of site rules, even if it was an unjust ban born of mod favoritism and hypocrisy. Okay, I don't get this. You argue my point about his new found usage of the right only to turn around and acknowledge it in a negative slant. No. Tyson never used the right like he did in Bruno 2 previously. He may havea thrown some right hands but never this effectively in volume. His hands look pretty fast, and it's possible he developed it because it's an effective weapon for a swarmer, especially when going over the jab. Bruno was not prepared for it at all. I also wouldn't say too mirror image, Tyson has considerable more success in Bruno 2, in large part because of the right hand I mentioned.
I hear a sick individual called this Mongoose's grandfather a child molester and made sick oral sex jokes involing children, and when Mongoose said this person must be a pedophile to harbor such thoughts he was perma banned. What a sad strange story.
I wish I knew what happened. PM me when you can bud. I kinda did do that, didn't I. I see what you're saying about him throwing the straight right more. He threw it immediately against Holyfield in their first bout. Didn't see it that much against Mathis or Seldon though. Well, Bruno fought a far worse fight in the rematch. To me Tyson looked almost the exact same, leading with lunging hooks, off balance, barely any inside game, but you're correct with the straight right. As I stated above, I'm not so sure he used it with much success after Bruno and the first second of the Holyfield bout.
I believe the true boxing fans gave Holyfield a chance. Maybe not general sports fan or casual sports fan.
