Alright no harm done, its good we can have a debate without resorting to insulting each other anymore.

When you put it like that I agree with you, I even think GGG stops him close to your round. IMO the only person who I would have made favourite over GGG is Ward, everyone else from 154-168 would be the underdog for sure.

I think GGG is slowing down, I think Jacobs may show some holes in game but ultimately with his chin to beat GGG is just too much of an ask. The only person who has a good shot against GGG is Canelo but even he is waiting for GGG to age abit more before he gets in the ring with him.

And Sturm, Pirog and Chavez Jr. It was considered a relatively strong division at the time, specially if you add in guys like Barker and Geale, the upcoming Quillin and maybe Lee, (despite being bullied by the huge JCC Jr).

Thing is Pirog got injured, Maravilla got old, Williams got crippled, Sturm lost to Geale, Jr proved to have little beyond his size and GGG chewed up and spat out most of the rest.

Your right, although I don't think anyone as defensive as Lara can beat GGG. Whoever beats him will have to have good counter punching ability, a good chin and defense as you said and will have to be adept on the inside/smother GGG's work.

Since 2008/9? Why would you think that? It was still considered relatively strong in 2012/3 from my recollection. See above. Thing is a lot of the old names departed within a year or two without there ever being a real passing of the torch.

Needs to come out throwing heavy leather and hope to catch a reckless GGG early with the perfect shot.

I over estimated abit but from 2012 onwards the division was becoming stale.

In referring to Jimmy Young/Erislandy Lara, I have to say that just surviving to the end without being decked is a good thing IMO, but sufficient, eye catching, effective offense must be displayed...somewhat like Young's bout with Foreman, and in my opinion, vs Ali and Norton....to actually win. No one, except the purists likes a negative fighter..certainly not the judges...so a guy like Lara could, again, in my opinion...be the guy who goes the distance with GGG because he's dedicated to defense...at the expense of placing himself in harms way for too long, but he neglects offense a bit too much, and certainly would vs a monster like Golovkin. But maybe on an inspired evening, he could be sneaky and effective, like Jimmy Young in San Juan, and spring an upset.

No one is going to outpunch GGG. Lemieux probably had more one shot power than Golovkin, but GGG was certainly the more effective, better puncher, ala Joe Louis vs Max Baer, and he took the Canadian apart. Also, GGG has a great chin, so trying to ko him and standing in the way of the shots that he will be shipping in so effectively seems like pure suicidal foolishness. The guy who beats GGG will have to be defensively adept and preferably with a good chin and not get carried away with matching him punch for punch. Self preservation interspersed with effective aggression will be the key for whoever is capable of that, and again, I don't think that Jacobs is that man.

Yeah probably not. But that's his only hope, that or GGG suffering some fluke injury.

I don't think surviving beats being decked, if you get decked whilst putting up a great effort.

    A. You will struggle to attract big fights with a very negative style and b. You do not gain any fans being purely negative.

I think Lara could maybe get to late in the fight but I would expect him to get stopped. In recent times he's been fighting poor opposition except martiroysan.

The Foreman that lost to Young wasn't prime Foreman although it still was a dangerous opponent. Young was a high level gatekeeper for me.

Anyone who knows my history in the Classic forum knows that I love Jimmy Young. Jimmy's style played against him...it was hated by the judges, but it was so effective. Foreman's excuse that it was too hot that night in San Juan was bullspit. Young could quote Joey Maxim, referring to his tko of SRR, saying "what you do think I had an air conditioner in my corner?" (paraphrased loosely)...it wouldn't have mattered if they were in an air conditioned arena, Young would have had Foreman's number....remember, it's all about styles....styles make fights. Foreman, big, in shape and menacing as hell that night, would have decapitated just about any other fighter that night not named Muhammad Ali or Jimmy Young. All he needed was someone to be in the line of fire, whether they were trying to offensively engage him, like Ron Lyle, or quaking with fear and freezing up, like Ken Norton and so many others. Wouldn't have mattered if he was in the same guy who ko'ed Frazier in '73,.....again, it's all about styles.
Relating this to the thread subject, I maintain that if Lara dedicates himself to defense, and fights like he did vs Canelo, he'll go the distance all right, but he wont win. If however, he steps up to the plate and employs some of Young's patented sneakiness, well, lets just say that things could be very interesting, to say the least.
Trying to ko GGG is definitely not the way to go.

I'm not as well versed in classic boxing so I won't debate you on Jimmy young.

The Canelo tactic wouldn't be as effective against GGG because GGG has quicker footwork and cuts off the ring much better than Canelo. Eventually GGGs body shots would catch up to Lara and it's hard to change once you set up a defensive game plan.
