GGG is a very quality fight but I feel that the lack of competition will be the reason he isn't a top ATG. Not a GGG fan but seems to have reached elite level too late, has around only 3 years left before he retires or gets KO'ed by a new prospect. In my opinion the only way to beat him is to be very fast, have a good offense, power and can take a good shot.
Ward got outboxed by Kovalev. GGG is a far more skilled and polished boxer. Ward at 168lbs presents no trouble for GGG.
GGG can be beaten, especially considering how they are colluding to have him drug tested year round while fighting opponents like Jacobs who are not tested. Sure Jacobs has been enrolled in VADA for a month but that is simply lip service, they are not testing him.

It takes a top-level skillset to know exactly when to follow up and when to retreat to momentary safety. But you're right, GGG on the back foot in the face of a combination should be taken advantage of.
