In 88 after the spinks ft rooney, for whatever reason s leaves the team tyson. Don King moved in and bill Cayton was also out. In his next fight he struggled with Bruno and after that ko's Williams. Then in 89 tyson decides his new team ain't doing it for him. He contacts rooney and Kevin comes over. Within day s its like rooney s never been away. Tyson decides to kick King off his back and brings Bill back in. Tyson trains the best he has for years. Before long he's in top shape and his life is back in control. He then signed for Douglas Rooney drums it in to tyson that buster is no walk over and he needs to take it seriously. Tyson does just that. No girls, no party's, just training and more training. He then enters the ring.. What happens next? Is Douglas always going to win what ever the circumstances? Is he tyson s kryptonite.?or does this tyson do what s expected of him?
Tyson didnt spar enough in preperation for douglas. He didnt mentally react well to getting hit, he ended up being frozen by douglas' feints and douglas basically had the time and space to beat the crap out of him after a couple of rounds. Tyson would snap out of it and jump in with a big shot a few times a round but it wasnt enough. Rooney in the corner doesnt make a difference if he didnt put in the work in camp. To answer your question if tyson was fully dedicated he may have beaten that douglas but thats just not what happened. I think 27 years is enough time for us tyson fans to get to terms with that
Too many ifs and's or buts on this one to matter ! If every fighter stayed in their optimum shape with their optimum team and optimum circumstances, they would All have better records. Peak Tyson was awesome. Its such a shame he didnt stay peak and focussed for another few years to see how he coped with new and more challenging opposition.
Blow out champions can often be a victim of their own success. Liston, Foreman, Tyson, Gerald Mcleanon etc eventually an in form fighter will suck it up and take them into deep water that their not used to. If it wasn't Buster it would be somebody else. Rooney being there to hold the spit bucket won't change anything. It's great winning fights early or easily or having such talent to bypass actual seasoning, but it's the rounds you lose, the times a fighter learns to get up off the floor that really makes a great fighter. If you go so far without that experience to draw upon you will still come unstuck with even the best training, the best camp and the best corner advice. Even Joe Louis had to deal with it in the first Schmeling fight. Great fighters need to know how to win a great fight before they're in a great fight.
Tyson didn't want a strong, in-charge, alpha trainer (or manager) in his camp. He didn't want to have to work hard and listen and be told what to do and how to train and when and where to do it. So he didn't want Rooney and wouldn't have listened if the guy had been there. Would have made zero difference.
Tyson just had yes men around him. When there is no one there to ever tell you no that`s not healthy.
Totally right on that score. Rooney didn't kiss ass like the guys that came later. He didn't need people round him like, that to a degree is why he started to go down hill. I think tyson needed some one to be on his back and kicking his ass to stay in control. I'm not putting it all on rooney leaving that caused the tyson break down but it did go some way towards it. Imo
And that s why I posed the question regarding rooney. It seems strange that as soon as he left the tyson team the crack s appear. Or at least to replace Kevin and the rest with some one who new what they were doing.
Would have been a very hard fight in any case. As is, it was close enough, so it's hard not to believe that a well-prepared Tyson would win. KO, maybe 5 rounds. As it actually happened, Douglas won fairly and deserved the win.
Tyson landed that one uppercut when he was actually in trouble himself. Outside of that knockdown it was a one sided affair with Douglas boxing and punching Tyson silly. It was high drama because of the odds but Buster was in total control that night.
Yes - we agree on that. Douglas won cleanly and clearly. But the knockdown showed that Tyson still had enough for the KO if he could have put the punches together.
He did no doubts about it. Douglas was on top form and knocked the crap out of tyson. Was more a question of if it would have made a difference with a more stable and experienced team in tyson s corner. Perhaps non at all. But tyson after rooney was a different fighting machine and perhaps he would have stood more of a chance.
