True. The Cubans and Soviets basically cheated in all Olympic sports. Back then, the US atheletes were true amateurs. All the Soviet Block and Cuba atheletes were pros paid and by the state. That's what makes the US 1976 Olympic Boxing team so special. They won a bunch golds when there was no Soviet/Cuba boycott.

If Stevenson had defected, he may have been able to adapt to the pro game and given Ali a test. All we know that he could beat the best amateurs in 3 round fights.

 

Was he really called the great white hope? Surely there must have been better white heavyweights around at that time?

 

Bugnar was a much better fighter and white but not American.

What a strange post and about Duane also, he certainly had the cash to help with this win or loss. Heres the great oddity of Duane whom I watched from his golden glove days on, he was very well taught and knew full well how to block and slip right hands but from the time of his loss in the Olympics, where right hand after right hand felled him (he beat Stevenson previously in the Pan Am. games), right through the Tate right hand massacre, in the big pressure fights he just stood there and took one after another, freezing entirely as one who had never boxed. Before and after the Norton blow out, he blocked and weaved from right hands as in his next bout with LeDoux as he was fully able, but was an ice statue in the big ones. I've never heard Duane talk of it, I would suppose he might not understand it either and what a shame.

Poor Duane, God bless him! I feel bad for the title I put on this thread now! He got dinged 100 too many, if he saw this thread that I put on he would throw that quick sharp right in my face and send me back to birth. I wish him the best, he is strugglin' these days and I'm gonna burn for giving him knocks. Salute to a great one that was on his way.

I remember Bobick. They pitched him against the relatively crude Kallie Knoetze whose idea of cunning strategy was to throw the overhand right* full bore over and over until it landed. Alas, it landed, and it was a wrecking ball. Goodnight, Duane.

* One or the hardest overhand rights I've seen, to give him credit.

 

The only time I've heard his name was when they were showing a feature on Larry Holmes on TV and they mentioned that Holmes had lost to Bobick in the 1972 Olympic trials when Holmes was dropped and was eventually disqualified for excessive holding when Bobick followed up.

 

Duane had too many amateur wars, against pro's and they other countries, best, he was damaged beyond repair, Since when did Bugner become such a world beater, i'd put Bobick, even Scott Ledoux against him, on agressiveness alone, the'd have him pinned against the ropes! They handlers' did their job, making Bobick & company a lot of money for his ability. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how "safety first" Joe Bugner has got so great, Bobick would win 8 out of 10 rounds, Who unlike Joe, gave an honest, and valient effort!
