After hours and hours of undercard matches with fighters, team members, and officials stepping in and out there can accumulate dirt and grit on the canvas. A small granule of dirt could be the starting point of opening up a cut or getting into a fighters eyes.
I'm not sure what changed in the past 100 years that means it doesn't need to be done anymore.

This is old school there was an actual and reasonable reason why they did this. I,m waiting for the right reason, think back to those days, you will figure it out.

Gloves were wiped in the old days when resin was used on the soles of the shoes to get a better grip on the canvas. It was done to prevent resin getting the eyes or on the skin of the opponent. I have seen resin boxes used up until around the mid 80's when technology developed more nonslip soles. It has always been a tradition to wipe gloves and you could say it continued after the use of resin to clean any dirt or grime that might be there.

Right on the factor. That is the reason, the people who said it was because of dirt or grime are young boxing fans. and I love you for loving boxing

That's an interesting fact I did not know. However to say it isn't needed anymore is still incorrect.
