To clean them off, trying to lesson the the instances for cuts and help keeping sole grit out of fighters eyes. Wtf does "old school" have to do ?
Pre 80's boxing boots usually had leather soles which could be quite slippery. Modern ones usually have rubber or synthetic soles with a tread pattern with plenty of grip. I remember in the old days you would sometimes see guys reloading their soles in the resin box in between rds when they were having problems with slipping. The resin was usually roughly crushed to a powder but also contained coarse particles which could theoretically cause problems if not wiped. In saying that the only ref I have ever seen who did a thorough job of wiping was Australian ref Ray Mitchell who used to have a red rag hanging out of his back pocket which he used to give them a good wipe.
Man I would love to just sit back one day and talk boxing with you. You know wayyyy more than I do, but I attribute a lot of that to age. I'm just 24 and I had no idea about any of this.
Thanks man. I'm 60 and have been involved with boxing since I was 11. The 1st fight I saw was Ali Liston 1 when I was seven.
