Carl Froch Wanted Andre Ward/Big Name @ Wembley, But Slithered Into Retirement When GGG Said LEZ GO!

I like Froch but this is what he said about a potential Golovkin fight.

 

Kovalev and Ward agreed to fight after Ward vs Barrera which was at 175. Also, before that Ward was fighting Paul Smith at some sort of catchweight around 170 if I remember correctly and before that Ward was inactive. Ward had absolutely zero relevance for GGG who fights at 160 and is in no position to make any demands. That fight was never even close to happening.

GGG beating Ward wouldn't mean anything to casuals because nobody knows Ward. Canelo is the big scalp and in order to get that fight made GGG has to stay at 160.

GGG is a much bigger star than Ward and Kovalev. Froch is an international superstar, that's why GGG wanted to fight him. Canelo is a star too. Ward and Kovalev are not. GGG's biggest fight that "flopped" still made more than Kovalev vs Ward fighting each other. GGG vs Canelo is a 1 million + PPV, something that Ward or Kovalev can't get no matter who they ever fight. GGG is also a big star in his home country and is known all over the world. He is one of the faces of boxing now, sells out arenas and has good sponsorship deals and a fanbase. Ward isn't even known in his hometown Oakland.

 

Wrong. Ward moved up to fight Kovalev. Ward is a real fighter and not a ducker.

 

Froch and GGG would have been good. Both have good chins and have power. Froch would have the natural size advantage but not got as good skill as GGG making it a close match. If I had to pick a winner I would go for GGG due to the different styles he could use to throw froch off and not let him settle into his comfort zone. Could see a comfortable UD for GGG due to being more skilled.

He is not a star in any shape or form. He is a PPV failure. Ward vs Kovalev . Ward vs Froch were all bigger more popular fights than any GGG fight. And they all sold OUT.

Because he's such a joke? I wouldn't go that far.

 

2 weeks after the Lemieux fight ward signed his HBO contract that would lead up to the Kovalev fight. So where does it make sense that Ward wanted an early/summer 2016 fight with Golovkin? But both fighters are to blame in my opinion. Everybody wants to be the A-side and that's what makes fights like this harder to make.

Ward moved up because he is a natural 175 pounds fighter and couldn't cut weight anymore. Kovalev had all the titles at 175 so it's obvious he would have to fight him at some point. Ward would have "moved up" with or without Kovalev in the picture.

 

We're comparing him to Andre Ward not to De La Hoya or Mike Tyson. GGG is far bigger star than Andre Ward could ever hope to be. Ward had his first PPV fight later than GGG despite being on the scene way longer and it was against the biggest name he could possibly face and it did what, 150k or less? The same number GGG did against a complete unknown. And PPVs don't tell the whole picture, GGG is a big name worldwide, he's one of the faces of boxing, he's big in his home country. Nobody knows Ward.

Kovalev and Froch were the biggest possible fights Ward could have had and they didn't reach the mainstream audience at all. Golovkin's biggest possible fight is Canelo which will be a 1 million + PPV. Golovkin vs Froch would have been way bigger than Ward vs Froch too.

 

He didn't have to fight Kovalev. He could have pulled a duck like Stevenson . But he fought in in his first year at the weight.
He took on the type of challenge that GGG walked away from.

 

GGG didn't walk away from any challenge. Kovalev is the same weight class as Ward, GGG isn't. Also, Ward didn't hold a title like Stevenson did, he was in no position to duck people if he wanted to stay relevant.

The only one who cowardly walked away from a challenge is Ward not wanting to have a rematch with Kovalev and not honoring his words.

 

Everybody knows Ward. He's bigger and more popular than GGG. So is Kovalev. GGG has been around for donkeys years. Krusher only came onto the world scene 4 years ago and he's still more well known.

Ward was invited over to the UK to commentate for Eubanks last fight and he had hordes of people out to meet him. He was mobbed. He was giving talks to huge crowds.

Conlans fight last night had more buzz around it than GGGs fight tonight and he was making his pro debut. The basement was hopping , there wasn't an empty seat in sight , it was packed OUT.
Upstairs tonight will just be over half full. He attracted the same crowd as a guy making his debut

GGG needed Ward badly. It was the only legacy fight available and he passed on the chance to prove his greatness

 

Ward was a career long 168 pounder. He moved up to fight Kovalev. GGG refused point blank to do the same with Ward.
