Thurman- Garcia was boring, GGG is a journeyman, Ward Kov was a dud,

maybe we should all be watching mismatches after all,

of course that's when all the gushing over the top posts start happening....the ones that are so frowned upon by the fan police cough cough shockmaster

is it possible that competitive matchups produce fights that are harder to appreciate

 

Yes....that is clean and vada tested HW's.

 

Rigo had more amateur fights and is older. Wlad had fewer but still many, and had had a much longer pro career at 35 with more tough fights.

But, yes, these things are individual of course, and as I said, I can't say for sure that Golovkin isn't getting old, but the most obvious change is a higher quality of comp. I really like Golovkin and think it's too bad that he didn't get this kind of fights 5-6 years ago, but what we're looking at is that his dominance hasn't been the same against the most skillful opponents he's met. It could be down sudden aging (that does happen after all), it could be that he had an off night and it could be that he's facing better opponents. We might never get to know for sure, but for me a combination of the second and third alternative look the likeliest.

 

Because GGG is prepared to run through anything they put in front of him, drugs or no drugs.

He is only concerned with fighting, not what with what these drug cheats put into their bodies.

 

Agree, I was wondering about the same thing as I was watching the fight. That and him sort of switching on the cruise control.

 

GGG has set the bar so high that anything less that complete dominance has people looking at his age and suggesting he is on the slide.

Past his peak? Or did he just have a tough fight and deliver a below par performance?

We won't know the definitive answer to that question until at least his next fight.

 

It's certainly near consensus even amongst casuals that he's not the fighter he once was, and he can only look worse from here on out.

I do agree that Abel Sanchez focusses too much on power. Golovkin came out of the pitter patter amateur era, he had the skill to be able to trade in flurries which has been completely stripped away - in a more controlled dose, retaining this quality could've helped him more. The focus on breaking fighters down and knocking them out does not inherently mean a focus on outpointing.

 

The GGG we saw last night is the same GGG as always. He just had a fighter in there with him that could fight and did fight. People have been saying from day one that he needs to fight a proper middleweight because they knew that he wasn't being tested properly. He got that test last night and in my opinion he didn't pass.

 

We have been spoiled with those 3 fights you named. I enjoyed all 3 but GGG vs Jacobs was a great great fight in my opinion. Now we get Wlad vs Joshua next.

True this, all of it. He could box beautifully when he wants. His punch selection is/was excellent.. I could see brook bracing himself for nearly every shot Golovkin was throwing because ggg was putting to much onto them and delivering to slow...But even if he tried to concentrate more on boxing I think its to late now in his career.He looks a tired version of himself, regardless who hes fighting.
