The commentators were talking about size but they looked the same size? But romans punches had no effect at all on the thai. He put together some nice combos on his face but the thai kept marching forward. Did roman deserve the loss? It was a close fight, I should watch it again.
What went wrong was bad judging. Gonzalez' punches were crisp and showy. Wongek or whatever his name was, had a crude, and primitive, unathletic punching style, as if he was not a natural lefty. His punches often were blocked or missed. Gonzalez definitely clearly outlanded him most rounds. I think what happened was the boxing powers that be, smacked Gonzalez back down to Earth for being a Diva. He refused bouts against Estrada, Cuadras, and Inoue, claiming he wanted big bucks, so he takes this fight for less than what he would have gotten to face those guys, and gets shafted on the cards.
There is always a style that some fighters no matter how good find hard to deal with Look at ward his hardest fight was against bika a fighter with little talent / but a lot of heart /will to win and awkwardnes I should say up to his last fight.
What went wrong is Roman's power didn't carry up, so his punches have less effect and Sor Rungvisai hits like a Super Flyweight sledgehammer, Roman a great little guy lost to a really good underrated heavier handed bigger guy.
The guy he fought looked bigger, more powerful and very tough. Cuts obviously didn't help. The judging may have been a bit suspect too. I didn't actually score the fight so I can't say for sure but maybe he didn't deserve to have the decision go against him.
What went wrong was that he should have rematched Cuadras, Estrada or fought Inoue. I'm not being a Monday morning quarterback either, I stated this before he signed to fight Ringvisai. Still wondering why he backed away from the Cuadras rematch?
Terrible judging. Maybe the cut influenced the judges' feeble minds. Also the Thai had power and did better than was expected. That also impresses bad judges. But it was close but clear for Gonzalez.
His style is similar to Rungvisai's in the sense that they are both both come forward fighters with a high output. Sure Chocolatito's has more finesse and skill but once he realised he was outgunned on power he should have changed the game plan. I recently watched the Caudras vs Rungvisai fight, the key difference between Caudras' beating Rungvisai and Gonzalez was Caudras was moving. Not just moving anywhere he was constantly circling away from Rungvisai's left hand and forcing Rungvisai to unset whenever he thought he had him cornered. I think if Gonzalez did some of that he could have frustrated the Thai and had more success.
You call it primitive and unathletic but it was a effective. Whether you think Gonzalez won or not, I'm sure you can admit he was hit a lot in this fight compared to a lot of his other fights,
Did you see the 'alot'? these last two fights have been the most he has been hit. No one is gunna criticise the heart, chin and will of Gonzalez the guy is an absolute warrior I love fighters like that but his defense is suspect at this weight. I don't like this narrative that the Thai was doing nothing when if that were the case the fight wouldn't have been competitive which it clearly was.
