Good video. I think apart from the 11th that was my card exactly... I had Jacobs winning by a round on fight night, still need to rewatch it. Don't have a problem with the decision... As the saying goes. You need to BEAT the champion.

Thanks for detailed explanation. Although I do not agree on some rounds, but this gives a clear understanding of criteria you used for scoring.

However I have a question, Jacobs was a contender, isn't it the case where he should have shown more to get close rounds in his favour?

I see a lot of people saying such and such "definitely won that round", and I honestly believe most of these rounds were fairly tricky to score. There weren't too many rounds that I would describe as "clear rounds".

I would have had no problem whatsoever if Jacobs got the nod.

Thought it was a surprisingly great fight myself, and would love to see them do it again.

I'd actually prefer Golovkin-Jacobs II over any other fight that can reasonably be made at 160.

Thanks. And for your question, my personal take is that the phrase "you need to take the belts from the champion" referred primarily to the idea that a champion retains his title in the event of a draw. Although I suppose many interpret that idea otherwise, in the way you're indicating. But I "try" (key word being TRY) my best to just score fights without considering that kind of stuff, and when it's a close round, I try my best to find ways to differentiate between the 2 based on my immediate perception of what just happened.

I'm not claiming my approach is right, and I can assure you that my judgment is far from infallible, so I'm certain I've called a number of rounds 1 way watching live, and another way rewatching later.

Regarding this particular fight, I really thought the bout could have gone either way, but the judges' final verdict seemed to flow with what I believed was an accurate "representation" of the fight on the whole.

Getting away from scoring, the one aspect of the fight I found most interesting that I didn't really expand on, was why Gennady seemingly abandoned his jab in the middle rounds. I thought his jab looked largely spectacular in the first 3rd or so of the fight, and I thought it was decent in the final 3rd of the fight. But a lot of those middle rounds, he just seemed to stop throwing it for long stretches, and when he was throwing it, it was far less effective than it had been earlier.

Try as I might, I couldn't find a specific reason for this when I reviewed the fight again. It wasn't the southpaw thing, I don't think, because Danny turned southpaw early, and Golovkin was still firing off mean snapping jabs. And as far as I can see, with my mediocre understanding of the sweet science, I didn't see any specific adjustments that Jacobs made that would make Golovkin abandon/misuse what I largely consider to be his greatest weapon. I'd love to hear some theories on this myself. (@Bogotazo ?@IntentionalButt ? - you have any?). But without having anything else to reference, I'm going to assume that Golovkin was a bit more fatigued than we're accustomed to seeing him. I don't know.

Great video. Wouldn't have been mad either way the decision was made. I do think Jacobs stock rose. GGG's dropped a tad just because he looked human but nothing dramatic.

I'd like to see GGG Saunders next just so GGG becomes unified and gets it out of the way. Word is he will vacate after. Then if Canelo doesn't happen after that I don't see it happening. I'd be fine with Jacobs-GGG II.

If GGG does vacate after I'd love to see Jacobs vs Eubanks for a title in England. Love to see Jacobs KO him over there.

Also off topic. Thoughts on Brook-Spence? Love to see a preview video on that down the line. Hoping Spence wins and eventually sets up Thurman Spence down the line.

I agree but we know that it won't ever happen again. HBO wants and HBO guy to beat an HBO guy. Or it's May/Pac all over again. That's just business. Keep up the great work remaining unbiased, we both know that that does not fly around here and I'm guilty of it all the way.
Negative bias literally makes the 24 hour news cycle go 'round.

Very good detailed breakdown. My original card was 115-112 GGG. Then it was 114-113 GGG. So many close rounds. I thought GGG Jab and his crisper punching technique helped him scrape out a slim victory. I like you also gave Jacobs round 8 which many ppl believe GGG won (again showing how close this fight was) I split the first 2 rounds. Awarded GGG the next 3 and then had similar card to yours rest of way.
Close fight. Competitive. I think the judges got it right. Both men deserve praise.
And since you brought up Kovalev vs Ward - I thought this fight was much more competitive. I felt Kovalev won clear. But I agree that both men deserve praise in that bout as well. Ward picked himself up off the canvas and won most of the second half of the fight against a murderous boxer puncher

Good video. After rewatching it, I had it 114-113 GGG WHILST ALSO feeling 115-112 GGG and 114-113 Jacobs are equally plausible scorecards.

When I analyse greatness rankings, I don't say even fights are losses or victories for either fighter i.e DLH-Whitaker. They were ultimately evenly matched and Jacobs is indeed underrated.
Jacobs had an even fight with someone as good as GGG. This isn't an Arthur Abraham, this is Gennady Golovkin we're talking here. Jacobs has proved in this fight against the most dangerous of opponents that he is TRULY elite.

I don't think Jacobs wants a rematch, he feels he did enough to win the fight and doesn't have to prove anything to himself again. He said he'd rather look to the future, he'd really prefer to fight others and I don't see a problem with that. He really did prove himself in this fight and destroyed the demons from the Pirog fight.

I have a theory...GGG streched this fight and always wanted to go 12rds.

Now that the aura of invincibility is allegedly gone...BJS and Canelo want to sign some contracts baby.

Rummy's accent is hilarious. I like it when he says Gennady. In his accent.

You should get your own NJ sitcom
