That's exactly what you don't get. It's not about who punches harder. Ali was very unorthodox, he was pretty much known for it and in fact many boxing people of his time thought he wouldn't be anything because of that. It's called style. He made it work for him.

Smaller fighters have beaten bigger fighters throughout history. Ali beat 6'6 fighters too. Ever heard of Ernie Terrell? Ali gave him an ass whooping and in fact carried him the entire fight.
