Have to disagree here. Ward/Kovalev was a big legacy fight. It's probably the biggest legacy fight of the last 10 years. It was the two best fighters in the world at that time. It was an absolutely historical fight.

 

pretty much everyone here and everyone involved in the sport knows ward/kova was a legacy fight....but this is the internet and lance doesnt have to show his face...so when he conveniently needs it to not be, for arguments sake, he can make just another fight

Personally I can't think of a bigger legacy fight of the last 10 years. So from 2007 and on. I thinking back to all the fights that happened in that time and nope can't think of a more historical one than that. Can't do it.

Nobody really thought Canelo was going to defend that belt against GGG. He had alluded to that previously with his comments about his body not being ready and how he wouldn't give anybody a size advantage over him.

Khan got torn to bits for waiting on a Mayweather fight that never happened rather than fight Kell Brook.
He never wanted no part of Brook and said Floyd was on his radar to try get a pass.

Exact same situation here. k2 had other priorities they said. As long as it wasnt' Ward they were good to go.

What was historic about it? SprMW champ versus LtHW Champ? We saw that with Hopkins and Calzaghe in 2008. No one was calling that some major legacy fight (That i recall).

Was it bigger or better than Pac versus Cotto? JrWW Champ versus WW titlist? I don't think it was. But that's me.

Lets remember, Kov was a titlist, not the recognized LtHW Champ. that's still Stevenson, as annoying as that is.

 

The thing is - GGGs stock would have risen 10 fold had he taken that fight. Didn't matter if he won or lost , just challenging himself and going for it would have earned him a hell of a lot of credit and respect.
His stock would not have dropped at all.
Then if he won , you know these guys would be saying how he just obtained of of the best victories of the last 20 years and he's now a lock as a hall of famer and future top 10 ATG

Because Ward was/is seen as a highly skilled fighter who easily outclassed A level competition like Froch and Kessler. He eased his way into a 175 pound frame. And Kovalev was seen as an overwhelming force at LHW with a truly unique blend of devastating power, timing, coordination and skill.

Pacquiao vs Cotto is an important fight, but Cotto does not stack up to great WW's. He is nowhere close to great Welterweights of the past. And Pacquiao was undersized at WW anyway.

As for Hopkins and Calzaghe. If the biggest legacy fight of the last 10 years involved a 43 year old man. Then the rest of the boxing world needs to kick their own ****ing ass.
