After the Norton 3 bout, Ali was quoted as saying: "That is the last time I am fighting that "turkey" (i.e. Ken Norton).

GoldenHulk, I salute you. Norton was the best heavyweight out there, in the post-Foreman/pre-Holmes era, and he would've beaten Ali or Spinks. He got screwed yet again, which really damaged his legacy.

As for Spinks, if you read the excellent biography of him and Michael, Leon's main issue was addiction. He was an active alcoholic and drug addict from a young age. There was no way he would've ever excelled on a long-term basis with the amount of self-destructiveness he regularly engaged it.

It's a damn shame too. If Ali wanted a tune up fight, the WBA and WBC should have told him to fight at least to fight a legitimate contender, and if he chose to fight Leon Spinks, it wouldn't be for either of the belts. No fighter with a 6-0-1 record should be fighting for the world title in my opinion.
Look at Marvin Hagler, he waited years to get his first shot and he got a draw the first time, in a fight I believe he won. I read when Hugo Corro lost the middleweight title to Vito Antoufermo, he told Vito " now you can fight Hagler", Corro wanted no part of Marvin. Ken Norton for a short time was in a similar situation.

That has to be the reason that Corro just inexplicably stopped fighting in the 10th or 11th vs Antuofermo...it has to be...he just didn't want to fight Hagler. Corro could have easily beaten Vito otherwise, I believe.

'Black Hercules' That was Mike Weaver's nickname wasn't it? He was WBA champ around about the same time as Leon was fighting. I wonder how Leon would have done if he had fought Weaver instead of Holmes?

I quite like Weaver. TBH I think I'd take Weaver. This could potentially have been a very good fight.

Of course Marciano would have whipped them both at the same time ;)

Speaking of Mike Weaver, he got the nickname Black Hercules from Ken Norton. He also said he didn't like the nick.

I didn't know that but coming from someone who had a physique like Ken's, that should definitely have been taken as a great compliment by Weaver.
