Taking spinks out of the picture, which light heavy iyo could have beaten holmes as he was in 85?

    Harry greb?
    Billy conn?
    Archie Moore?
    Bob foster?
    Michael moorer?

Granted it was spinks awkward style that went some way to beating Larry but do any of the mentioned have the capability to defeat the holmes of 85?

I don't think any of them could replicate what Spinks did...Granted I didn't think at the time that Spinks could do it either...I think you pegged it with the mention of Spinks' herky jerky style, but with that said, Spinks really showed his toughness staying in with the bigger man for 30 rds.

Ezzard Charles would be my best chance. Maybe Tunney if he's as good as they say.

Maybe Moorer given the fact he did fight at heavyweight successfully. I'm also not sure how many southpaws Holmes ever fought. I just dont know if he had the foritude to go 15 and hold it all together

So true regarding spinks been tough. Even a good few years past prime holmes was still a dangerous guy. I didn't give spinks a chance in the first fight, remember been on the news next day he had beaten holmes. I was gob smacked.! History up to that point had basically taught us that light heavy to heavy was a bridge to far, so for spinks to do just that, a big upset. So yer respect to the guy.

Charles has a good shot. He beat a aging Louis, Walcott and gave rock a tough couple of fights, so definitely in with a chance.

Conn might have been a problem for an aging Holmes given his slick mobility, but I'm not sold on it enough to bet on him. Other men who aren't on that list might include Ezzard Charles and a young Roy Jones.

Jones could, after all he did get a heavy weight belt even if it was ruiz. Can see Jones style giving a older holmes trouble. If Jones had been light heavy back in the 80 s and he had moved up, yes could definitely lean towards a upset.

I think so too. Jones might not have been an ideal fit to be a heavyweight but there are certain pockets of opportunities on given nights where he could have taken advantage and squeaked out a win against a great heavy here and there. He was extremely fast, skilled and athletic. Also we're assuming that he's facing the Holmes who showed up in September of 1985 only half motivated and complacent. The May 1986 version of Holmes who got robbed against Spinks in the rematch was a bit more awake..

Yep, the rematch holmes was up for it and had a great fight. Still the judge s saw other wise. But yes it's the first spinks ft so Jones in there, eager to prove a point and no messing. He really could have done it the more I think about it.

Greb and Conn definitely providing they had the body building methods that Spinks had in their own time.

Strange to think of the similarities between tunney v dempsey and Holmes v spinks. Spinks and tunney both excellent light heavy s, both beat long standing ATG s by decision and then in the rematch both came close to losing. Tunney by long count and spinks escaped by a dubious split decision.

I'd give Moorer a quite decent chance.
