Gavilan puts up a great battle but Leonard takes it in a thriller. Goes the distance. Head to head on a prime for prime basis,I see only the original Sugar Ray beating Leonard.
I think the version of Leonard that beat Hearns, would take a clear points win. Gavilan was fast, but Leonard is quicker and hits harder.
Only one fighter in the history of that division beats a prime and ready R.Leonard, and that's R.Robinson. And it wouldn't be easy for him. Leonard defeats Gavilan in unanimous dec.
Really? In a thread where I just posted Duran beating Leonard at Welter... Is there a collective movement to will the Brawl in Montreal out of existence? I hate to burst your bubble but Leonard in the prime of his life was defeated by a past prime Roberto Duran at Welter Weight. So saying he could only be defeated at that weight by a single theoretical opponent makes no sense.
Dundee along with Leonard were good with the media and they were able to spin their excuses. Every fighter has an excuse after they lose a fight but in this case the American media took it as Gospel. It was the same way with Ali.
I disagree. I think SRL was peaking right around when he first retired. I think the Duran loss was a great learning experience and that he came back better than ever down the track. The master of mental warefare played SRL like a puppet and drew him into a battle SRL thought he could win but Duran suspected he couldn't. SRL was prime for sure, but he wasn't yet peak. Duran both proved it and ushered it. For me the latter SRL would pip the best of 147 Duran. It's definitely debatable and one can argue either side.
1st, let's stop that other myth everyone's so inclined to believe in that Duran was past prime. Duran was 28/29 yrs old. He grew into the welter weight div naturally. If Duran had remained at welter, with Hearns and Benitez going to jr.middle and Leonard retiring, its a very safe bet Duran would've regained the welterweight championship and defended it probably up until Curry was ready for his championship challenge. And he would've been a very safe bet to beat Curry, esp if he was ready to fight. 2nd, using your logic, R.Robinson being defeated by J.Lomatta in the prime of his career should some how be held against him . So Theoretically (your words) It should be held against him, his lost to Lomatta ( was Lomatta better than Duran at welter?). Me, I don't see it that way, If your fighting talented or ATG competition more than likely, you will suffer a lost, even in the prime of your career. IT HAPPENS.... Not because your not special, its because on that night that other talented fighter was special on that night. Unlike F.Mayweather jr. who timed when and who he fought, to have all the advantages. So let's not cherry pick certain fighters for your argument and omit others. Because your argument can be used against ANY fighter who had the desire to prove his greatness and took a misstep against great opposition.
Gavilan tries to land his bolo punch on Leonard, and Sugar Ray takes his head off with the left hook. Leonard by middle-rounds stoppage.
Good point but you must remember that Leonard allowed himself to be sucked into fighting Duran's fight in that one. When he fought his OWN fight,he was nigh on unbeatable at welter. This is n't taking anything away from Duran, though as he was maginificent in Montreal.
