Does Andre Ward receive enough credit for what he has achieved? I think that if you've won a Gold Medal, won a super 6 tournament and unify the division during the process, moved up and challenged a tough and good boxer in Kovalev - You've had quite a successful career! Yes his style is ugly, but this is boxing and there are plenty of styles. His style makes him very awkward and his ring IQ is up there with the best. People seem to dig into his wins as much as they can until they find an excuse for the victory however i understand Kovalev was a controversial decision and majority believe Ward lost..
This....fighters tend to be appreciated more when there best days are behind them. Look at the love for Bhop towards the end rather than during his middleweight days. Wards style can be ugly... but he's a real scientist in the ring... When you look at his list of wins its fantastic. Kessler, Froch Kovalev - top tier guys and he only really had trouble with one of them. Even behind the A level there are some good wins like Bika and Allen Green. If it wasn't for his lay off id say he was the number 1 fighter lbs for lbs
His style is boring but his mentality is absolutely second to none. Fought everyone at SMW and has back to back fights with the most feared LHW on the planet.
I would give him more credit if he opted to 'box' more than hug. He has great defense, is a thinking fighter, great speed and timing but he fights in such a dirty way it comes across as he is hiding his true talent. Also he avoids slick fighters such as Andre Dirrell which I thought would have been a 50/50 fight at 168 during the super six.
He didn't fight Bute or Dirrell. Most feared LHW is Beterbiev and has been for the last two years. The only one that is scared of Kovalev is Chickenson. No one wants to go near Beterbiev after what he did to Cloud.
There's billions of men he hasn't fought. I was on about the elite fighters. Beterbiev doesn't have any elite victories yet he's still prospect level. Kovalev was the premiere LHW even if he never faced the actual champion.
Won gold medal, won super six, faced world champon at lw and ko:d him. Retires for 2 years, then faces n#1 p4p and beats him in a close fight.
Ward is surely a great guy. After all, he dragged a man dying of cancer through every court in the land. He is truly a remarkable person.
not my favorite fighter by a long mile.. but i do respect and apreciate his skills and acomplishments. it shouldnt be just hate/love.
Beterbiev is nowhere near as feared as Kovalev, not at all. As far as fear goes, none of the top 4 LHW's are afraid to fight each other.
