https://streamable.com/sea6z Baer seems to take a round off here, while he tries to move away from Carnera. Primo constantly stalks Max, and lands some pretty big straight rights. He also starts controlling the pace with his jab, and lands with some big combos. He came close to taking over the fight.
Awesome once again rez...it's clear that Baer is regrouping..gathering his strength for the next onslaught....and I agree that Primo was far more skilled than many...myself included, ever gave him credit for. All that good work by Primo in this fight....all to be outdone and undone by the power and savagery of Baer.
Yeah man He definitely gained many points in my book after watching the Baer fight in HD. His agression, his sharp jabs and straights, his mobility for a big SHW. And he had tremendous heart. In this clip, he's fighting with a fractured ankle, and had already been knocked down 7-8 times or so. Yet he looks fresh. If Max wasn't the kind of guy who keeps his power for the whole fight, Primo would've stole this fight.
Yes those jabs tho! His mobility is good like you said but there is just something missing that probably kept him from being that next level. Defense? Max Baer? Joe Louis? lol
Yeah those jabs are battering rams. Yeah I think he simply reached his limits with Max and Joe. It seems like he had only three true losses, and those were against Sharkey Baer and Louis. It's hard to say if he could've done better. I honestly don't think any SHW, including Wlad, can get through both Max and Louis.
I honestly don't see Wlad or Vit being much better than this Primo. I swear if Wlad was filmed with the same camera, people might call him worse things than Primo. And don't even get me started on Vitali. Watch Vitali Adamek round 1, and tell me modernists wouldn't joke about him if filmed with 30's cameras. And of course they would be unjustified in doing so. Now look at Primo in this clip. Very high pace for his size. Fast hand speed especially with his jabs and straights and even hooks. Cutting the ring down with good stalking senses, but also has faster gears for his mobility. And he's fighting on a broken ankle after having been knocked down 7 times or so.
Also if you look at the highlights of the Gains bout, I suspect Primo was getting no favors from the judges. When Primo was landing on Gains, the crowd didn't react as much because it was to be expected. But when Gains landed a nice 1-2 the crowd goes wild, because it's much more aesthetically pleasing than Primos sloppy but effective attacks. And losing to Jim Maloney in Boston, despite having beaten everyone else? Sounds suspicious. If the hometown hero does remotely good against the foreign giant, with no cameras around, I could see Primo getting robbed. Although that is purely speculation, and until we have anything substantial to go off, we have to assume it was legit.
Have you looked into this at all? If so, have you found any evidence that would tend to either call into question or support the legitimacy of the outcome?
Like I concluded, I am freely speculating based on past occurrences in his career, and hoping that someone sheds more light on the bout. But we have to assume it was legit.
I'm curious about this Time Magazine (subscription required) writeup. http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,769552,00.html Starts off: "Primo Carnera, Italian brobdingnag, eased his 272-lb. carcass into a ring in Miami and sat down on his stool while various brisk little men fussed around him. One of the men was a doctor, for Carnera was supposed to have cracked one of his lower right ribs in training. The doctor had authority to stop the fight at any time if the patient felt badly. In the opposite corner sat Jim Maloney, hairy, amiable and hog-fat, who lost a ten-round bout with Jack Sharkey five years ago when Maloney was considered a fighter. Last..."
