Who has the better resume? Loma's significant wins: Martinez, GRJ, Walters, Sosa Rigondeaux: Agbeko, Cordoba, Donaire
Rigo has beaten nobody apart from Donaire, and he hasn't built on that win, he's just been inactive and fighting bums since. He doesn't deserve to be on P4P lists any more.
Lomachenko by a lot. I really hope this fight can get made before Loma moves to 135. Having Rigondeaux's scalp on his resume would be terrific for Vasyl.
Are Martinez and Sosa really big accomplishments though, and wasn't Walters exposed for being an overhyped bum? If I were ranking them I would put Donaire up against GRJ and be done with it. Frankly, James Dickens and Rigos upcoming match with Moses Flores are probably on the level of Sosa and Martinez and nobody is getting excited about those. In terms of difficulty, I think Rigos domination of Amagasa a guy 6.5 inches taller than him was more impressive than Lomas beating of Walters. For my money, Rigo has the better resume. You can try to stretch out the quality of Lomas wins just on the way he beat them, like we do with Golovkin, but to really put some red meat on the table he needs to fight someone like Mikey Garcia.
When was Walters exposed prior to Loma? IIRC Walters before meeting Loma was very highly regarded, almost like the lower weights version of Kovalev, you can't use Loma's own domination of Walters as a way to detract the quality of the win. Dickens is nowhere near Sosa and Martinez, Dickens never fought outside domestic level prior to Rigo, there's no comparison, Martinez/Sosa fought world level opposition and held belts. For me they're the same quality of wins as Agbeko pretty much. But yeah, the reason I made this thread is to basically compare Rigo's Donaire win to Loma's GRJ/Walters wins and see which one do people regard more highly.
Donaire was meant to utterly destroy Rigo. He was levels above any guy Loma fought. That counts for more than beating guys who you are fully expected to beat. It should also be noted that Frampton dropped his belt and ran to a different division to avoid Rigo.
Rigondeaux would be a nice scalp for Loma wouldn't he?! Man I hope that fight gets made before Loma moves up to 135! Rigondeaux has been flapping those gums for a while now.
I thought the Sosa fight exposed Walters, and when everyone was hyping him for the Loma fight I was like "Who cares? He sucks." I'm not sure if Walters was held in such high regard because he beat tiny shot Donaire or because HBO was building him up as a Lomachenko opponent. It reminds me of how as soon as someone was announced as an opponent or possible opponent for Mayweather their stock just shot up. Remember when Robert Guerrero entered the p4p lists? And I was like, "The same Guerrero who already got his ass beat by Salido? Did nobody else see that match?" Frankly, I think old man Salido might beat current Walters too. He deserved at least one victory over Martinez. As far as Sosa goes, I'd put him in the fine but nothing special contender category. Martinez belongs in the gatekeeper category with Salido. They can win a minor title but don't dominate and get beat by the big guys that pass through their division like Mikey Garcia and Lomachenko. Aside from Lomachenko, I just see super featherweight as a very lackluster division without any stars or noteworthy champions. I love Salido and Vargas for their action and crowd pleasing styles but they aren't physically gifted or super skilled. I think a win over Leo Santa Cruz would be as good as the rest of things he's done. The other beltholders in his division Berchelt and Davis should be pushovers. But like with Golovkin you can only fight who they put in front of you. A fight with Gamboa would mean something. A fight with Linares or Garcia would be good. But he's not surrounded with talent like super flyweight, light heavyweight, or welterweight are right now. Neither of the divisions he's fought in has had a dominant champion who could be the boss if Lomachenko weren't around. It's just your typical collection of beltholders and contenders, with the exception of Salido and Vargas who are technically limited action heroes.
Sosa exposed Walters? Walters was absolutely dominant in that fight, it was a really bad decision. I agree, SFW atm lacks any kind of glamorous opponents, he should be looking to move up after one or two more good wins at SFW.
It's been a while and I don't remember it being at all exciting, so don't expect me to go back and watch it again to prove my point; but my recollection was that they were pretty evenly matched and Walters was unimpressive that night. No wait. I might be thinking of Marriaga not Sosa. There was a bit of hype leading into the Lomachenko fight that drastically overrated Walters, but I remember before that and a few dissenting voices at the time questioning whether Walters only got the KOs over Darchinyan and Donaire because he was so much younger, stronger, and bigger. There were also some asterisks around his defense if we can judge from this thread in November https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/opinion-on-nicholas-walters.575983/
