I agree with Rummy here, Kovalev had the chance to stop Ward right there with that one knockdown. But he couldn't. He had Ward's head on a plate, but he couldn't finish the job when presented with the chance. Reminds me of Nazi Germany who were stopped shot some 30 miles of Moscow in 1941. And then failed to deliver the knockout blow to the Soviet Bear. Afterwards, the Germans never really go back in the drivers seat and lost the war on the eastern front as the Russians figured out their tactics. One Ward figured out Kovalev he managed to keep his chin out of harms way and strategically set up the fight the way that favors himself.
Great points, good assessment and nice segment as usual Rummy!! But I don't care.. WAR Kovalev!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another fine episode and very well balanced round up of the first fight. I see the rematch going down a bit different than yourself as I believe Kovalev thought he was cruising to the win so didn't press the issue. In the rematch I expect Ward to taste the canvass more than once, although being the warrior he is think he does see the final bell. Kovalev UD
I wanted Kovalev to win, but he has absolutely no chance of winning on the cards against Andre Ward, he must knock him out early because Ward can adjust in the final stretch. No chance to get a decision.
Nice breakdown again Rummy, and I agree with most of it. But I think there are a couple of angles to this you haven't considered yet. One is that after the fallout here there's a good chance at another Lewis vs Holy II effect, in which the outrage of first fight made the judges score "fair" the second time around, which actually was more like "score every close round for the visitor instead of the home fighter as we usually do". Second is the referee might actually take points this time around, for grabbing and dirty fighting. Third is that Kovalev might just win rounds on relentlessness this time around, and lose other rounds more clearly due to fatigue. Easier to tally due to that and harder to score wrong. Kovalev will then know where he stands after 10 rounds and can then decide if he still needs a finish or doesn't.
Another nice vid, Rummy! Wish you would put them all in a playlist so I can run em' one right after the other chronologically. Anyhow, nice work!
Kovalev will give Ward an honourable hero's end. There is no disgrace in death by the hands of the krusher.
Whether Kovalev missed a chance to KO Ward is irrelevant to how the fight should be scored. I can understand why Rummy scored it for Ward: I mean, he's spent his entire life overhyping Andre Ward, and when Kovalev outboxed him, Rummy had to find a way to give it to Ward. But I don't understand how so many other people can score it that way. I imagine the judges were paid handsomely by Ward's promotional company, but why are the fans scoring it for him without getting any money in exchange? Thankfully, the level-headed pundits like Steve Kim all scored it for the guy who landed more punches and made his opponent run away all night. But the rematch will be different. First of all, there should be no rematch, because Kovalev clearly outboxed Ward in the first fight. But now that the fix has taken place, we have Ward who has been able to study Kov well, and will come in with a better strategy this time. The fight will be much closer, and Ward will get the decision regardless of whether he actually deserves it or not.
