I really enjoy Lomachenko's style but I do think he's being a bit overrated. Ratings are subjective but it would be silly to discount resume from pound-for-pound. How you look is secondary to who you beat. Anyone can look great against a certain level. Loma has been facing the best in his division but he can't be skyrocketed above people with better resumes just because he uses angles well and taunts the likes of Sosa like a matador. When he dismantles Mikey Garcia like Rigondeaux did Donaire, then we can talk about surpassing Ward/Kovalev, Gonzales, Crawford.
I can understand this viewpoint, but not with regards to Crawford. Crawford hasn't fought the better opposition than Loma nor in the special circumstances, nor has he looked as impressive against them (despite looking incredible). If Loma put in a performance now like Crawford did against Ricky Burns, people would not be as impressed with Loma. When people rank Loma very high on the P4P, it's because it does mean something that he's fighting top guys within a few fights. Michael Conlan is 25, Loma was 25 when he turned pro. Conlan has been through two Olympic cycles like Loma. No one can reasonably assert that Conlan beating top fighters X, Y, Z is just as great as beating them after having had 10 professional fights adjusting to the professionals against lesser men - the former is definitely the greater feat. Loma has skipped the adjustment period and has been learning on the job whilst fighting the best - that is a situation worth note. Postol is a top fighter but I don't see him on a completely different class to Walters on an H2H level. A tiny framed, 135lb (therefore mediocre version) of Gamboa is at best a 'good' fighter. At 130, if he still has something left, he's very good. If Crawford-Gamboa were truly the same size, the outcome of the first 5 rounds could've been different. Of course Loma is a little overrated because you hearing claims from some of us saying he's at least a Tier II TBE level fighter - completely unproven in that regard but we go with it anyway. Edit: PS I have him P4P no.3, but can understand him being no.4. The loser of Kovalev-Ward will make Loma no.2 or no.3
Loma is great. It's not necessary to compare him with past great at present. He is carving his legacy by taking tough challenges, a rare breed. Let things unfold naturally.
Only Rigo didn't 'dismantle' Donaire. He stopped engaging after Donaire knocked him down and then proceeded to throw an extremely low punch output while circling the ring with his back to the ropes. You can't 'dismantle' someone when throwing a very low volume of punches. It simply doesn't work that way.
He didn't engage and threw very few punches getting knocked down in the process. That isn't a 'dismantling' A dismantling is what Calzaghe did to Lacy.
I watched it. It was a very mediocre fight with little action. One guy chasing and the other not wanting to engage.
No you didn't. Rigo made him look like a monster and Donaire was the one who stopped trying later in the fight. Foh. Imma almost the right so you can now watch the fight. And using Calzaghe and Lacy as dismantling is hilarious.
