Prime for prime: Andre Ward vs Joe Calzaghe?

Actually volume usually does beat a master boxer. Pacquiao has nothing to do with it. It means nothing since Pacquiao is not really a pressure fighter and also was the former Flyweight champ.

I pick Calzaghe over Ward in a UD.

 

I think Kovalev is the best fighter in the higher weight classes in modern times. I pick Kovalev to stop Calzaghe and he's already beaten Ward.

 

Hopkins v Calzaghe was all good to go when Hopkins was 160 champion, it was Hopkins who pulled the plug on the fight.

Yeah many on here never watched prime Calzaghe and only saw him when Jones and Hopkins were willing to face him. I guess with those two being from a similar era they new how good he was.
In the end it was hard for fighters to ignore Calzaghe because he kept winning

Hopkins is a circular mover who looks to capitalise on his opponents mistakes. That is one of many dimensions to Wards skill-set. At 41 Hopkins didn't have the legs or output to deliver a decisive victory and it still was very close as it was.
Nobody gives credit to Wards exceptional level of fitness and endurance. Wrestling with a big strong guy like Kovelaev and he still had plenty in the reserves after the 12. He never slowed down nor fall flat on his reflexes. Ward would make Calzaghe look bad.
It would go the 12 and be close , but Ward would clearly come out looking the superior boxer.
