This thread is great! I hadn't heard half of this stuff (whether real or otherwise) - Keep them coming please.
Smokin Bert Cooper long after he retired would give corner drug dealers an option of either handing over the cash or getting knocked out. He knocked them out then took there cash
Unpopular and boring opinion here: but I have no respect for a boxer who fights outside the ring. Boxing is a sport, that's it. A mature human being uses his words in a disagreement, not his fists.
Absolutely agree with this. However there are exceptions, and old retired boxers fighting off muggers or starching some young fake tough-guy type trying to intimidate them are great, feel good stories.
Not quite correct. Benn's photo was mixed up with that of a ****** in the newspaper (Benn's photo was meant to be in the sports section naturally). A number of people saw him as he was walking down the street and attempted to apprehend him....needless to say, it didn't go well for them, as Benn defended himself and beat the living daylights out of them.
@ Nigel Benn story Have read stories about Golovkin being encouraged to fight random men in the streets when he was a kid by his now deceased elder brothers.
Remember reading that Michael Dokes after his title defence ko loss with Coetzee traveled to Australia to recover and just get way. Anyone a local who was drunk was hassling Dokes and the barman wisely pointed who Dokes and he quickly backed off.
I was in a local pub many years ago Dave Charnley who fought Joe Brown for the light weight title was in there having a quiet drink with a couple of pals, a very large Gypsy started getting on his case, after a few minutes of this Charnley put his drink on the bar and they went outside.Charnley's mates didn't look concerned and carried on talking and drinking. After about half a minute the door opened and Charnley came back in,through the open door, I got a glimpse of a pair of feet pointing straight up to the sky .Charnley ,who was a snappy dresser did not have a hair out of place, and resumed drinking as though nothing had happened.
It probably never happened. Walker and his manager did get into a fight with a college football team once however.
Thanks for this story, Charnley was one of my favorite British fighters. Thanks to YT I finally got to see him in action.
