How would Tokyo Douglas do in place of Ken Norton against foreman?

Douglas from the tyson fight replaces Kenny Norton to face foreman. Any chance of a upset here or is this another foreman smash defence? Bringing all the attributes he had in Tokyo to this fight. Would Douglas show the world how to defeat the wrecking ball?

He would do very well because he could move backwards and box effectively while doing so, Norton could not.

Foreman confidence at sky high. Douglas wouldn't be able to out psyche
Foreman like Ali did. Yes Douglas would survive and surprise GF with his
speed and combinations in the opening rounds. However GF power shots
to body and then chin would be too much for Douglas. Foreman ko in 8.

Buster was "great" in the Tokyo fight, but got TKO'ed against a big Tony Tucker for the IBF vacant title 2-1/2 years before. Foreman would neutralize Buster's strengths, and tko him in the mid-rounds.

That's certainly something Norton couldn't do. Foreman had him going back before smashing him to the floor. Douglas, like u pointed out would be on the retreat but actually boxing as he was doing it. He would be catching foreman constantly with his jab. This is the same Douglas and mindset of Tokyo, so he's in there to win. George would be as usual dangerous but buster s radars on full alert. By half way foreman s looking worse for wear and breathing heavily
Can see buster finally catching a tired foreman some where around the twelve round. A solid combination puts him down and George to weary and battered to rise.

Buster was actually surprisingly doing quite well against Tucker and was, I think ahead on the cards when he ran out of gas and was caught in the 10th. I think most people thought that the unbeaten Tucker would win against a Buster that had already been been beaten by the likes of Jesse Ferguson, David Bey and Mike 'the giant' White (lol, that name always makes me chuckle) and were hoping that Tucker would win because they thought he would present a bigger challenge to Tyson. I think HBO were definitely hoping for a Tucker win but Buster came within a couple of rounds of pulling off the win.

Could have change the whole course of HW history if Buster had held on for the win and then met Tyson for the final unification fight, instead of Tucker.

At the time of the stoppage the points were 86-85,86-86,85-86,so a level fight.

I did a thread about this a while ago Ken, regarding what if Douglas had beaten tucker then met tyson. A few posters said they didn't think that version of Douglas would beat tyson at that point. I'm half and half on that. Douglas was a very talented guy as we saw in Tokyo and maybe would have beaten any version of tyson. But was it just perfect timing for buster in Tokyo and any other time Mike would have blasted him?

Sorry, I must have missed that thread of yours, Fergy.

Anyway it's hard to imagine the 1987 Douglas beating the 87 Tyson but then having said that Tyson didn't exactly overwhelm Tucker in the unification fight that Buster would have taken part if he had beaten Tucker in his previous fight so nothing's guaranteed but my money would have still been on Tyson.

It's still a shame that we never got to see a Tyson/Douglas rematch in 1990 to see if it was a once in a lifetime upset or a case of Buster just had the right style to beat Tyson.

Very much so. Of all the fight s that didn't happen in the 90 s, I think it's this one that is most frustrating. We've all heard the story s regarding Tokyo. But a rematch could have changed our view of it. A conclusive win from either man would have put things in a clearer perspective. So we're left with a lot of what ifs and if only s. Akin to frazier never rematching ali after fotc. The annoying thing is tyson rematch ed ruddock, a fight which he won the first time.

Douglas' size, jab, and movement pose problems. But Foreman cuts the ring off, forces exchanges, and takes Buster out with a series of punches after getting hit with a right uppercut.
    My take...Foreman KO5

I think Tokyo Buster would be a stern test for Foreman, not least because Buster would have been the big underdog, who for 'one night only' most definitely entered the ring in shape, with a never say die attitude, losing his mother only a few weeks prior to the bout so mindset was do this for her type thing.

Foreman of course could have chopped him down like a big ol tree, but Buster got up from Tysons punch, so who knows what would happen.

I'm thinking Forman's jab is a huge factor where as Tyson really didnt have that weapon

Very different style from Tyson, maybe if Douglas goes a few rounds Forman slows down and it becomes a good fight. Was Douglas ever blown out outside of the Holyfield fight?

Buster Douglas was bigger, quicker and the better boxer. He would have to contend with Foreman`s early round onslaught. Big George was a terror in those days. I think at least that night when he was in shape Douglas had everything you could want in a heavyweight. Determination was usually the missing ingredient. That night he had it even climbing off the canvas from a crunching Tyson uppercut.

I think Buster Douglas wins by TKO in the mid rounds maybe the 9th.
