After seeing Baer's popularity and the high regard he is held in via the Cooney thread i am most interested as to how he goes against another big heavyweight. Many consider Wlad's reign to be against quite ordinary opposition and then we have that jaw and Baer's big power. Baer has also decimated a giant in Carnera previously.

    How do we see it?

I think Wlad is greater, but this is a bad matchup for him.

Baers slip overhand is too dangerous for big guys like Wlad.

Good thread Jt. This could be one of those upset type fight s. Baer Comes out smiling and klitschko looks serious. Wlad starts jabbing away whilst max throws a few lazy right s. This is the pattern for the first few rounds. Half way through the 4 th as they step out of a clinch, baer unloads a solid right hand. It connects right and wlad s legs turn to jelly. Down goes wlad for a 8 count. As he arises max can be seen laughing in his corner!
Wlad try s to grab hold but max gets through with a couple more wicked right s. Klitschko goes down again heavy. He gets up at 8 but before max can move in the ref waves it off. What a upset!

I'm picking up what you're putting down. Baer is a lot more respected than i had realised. He is also quite well suited here stylistically. I really look forward to how the Classic family sees this one.

Good one Jt. We no wlad could be hurt and ko d, and baer could certainly hit. I certainly think he could do it. Let's see how it goes with the other comments.

I would probably end up picking Wlad based on his consistent body of form, but it would be a pick made with serious concerns.

Baer is exactly the kind of fighter who would be dangerous for him.

    Interesting.

There are several guys I rank above Wlad whom I believe he would match up well against head-to-head. But in this instance, it's the opposite. Baer is a guy I rank below Klitschko, but I think he matches up very well against Wlad head-to-head.

Mariusz Wach took everything Wlad threw all night long ,and landed only one significant punch,a right hand that shook up Wlad. Max had the chin and power to get the job done.

Wladimir should have no problems whatsoever with Baer.

Baer had very little defense and not much of a jab. Watch his fight against the otherwise-derided Braddock to see him get hit with practically every punch in the book, seemingly at will. He got whipped soundly by a guy people often say is one of the worst HW champions of all time.

Against Schmeling Baer looked better, using a cross arm defence that helped mitigate some of the German's punches. That said, it's patently obvious that the 15lb weight advantage Baer had over Schmeling made a big difference. Schmeling landed his jab at will and was often outscoring Baer head to head in the wheelhouse, where he'd have been much better advised to use his obviously superior skills and outbox him at range.

Baer had power, yes, but his swings are typically wild and there were points where he looked like the white Deontay Wilder, his arms were everywhere. Even when he got rid of the Black Uhlan, it took a series of flush punches to do the job.

Against Klitschko he'd be the one with not a 15lb weight advantage, but a 40lb disadvantage.

He'd be shipping punches from a massive puncher with a jab from hell and a dynamite right.

Worse, Wlad would not fight the sort of gruelling battle Baer seemed to prefer; he'd fight from range and tie him up inside and drape his weight over him round after round.

People seem to think a big punch is all that's required to beat Wlad. Yet, if we look at his record, then it's really only worked for Sanders. Brewster and Puritty won on their chins, and I don't see 205lb Baer eating those bombs all night.

I have no hesitation in saying Povetkin would have blasted him out of there, never mind Wlad.

Wlad was fortunate there was only 5 seconds left in that round. Bear was too fierce and too much of a savage for Wlad.

A little 'short' on skill and size though ;)

Well, of course, your average bear outweighs even the largest human.

I am sorry but neither Braddock nor Schmeling is remotely like Wlad, in terms of either size or style.

There isn’t one relevant sentence in this entire post.

Klitschko once he feel Max power would go into that mauling , grappling
style which he normally does. Max though takes none of this and out
muscles and hammers Klitschko via decision.

Yes, but Max Baer is the same.

Flat footed, no defense, a 'jab' that consists of sticking his hand out and telegraphed swings.

You REALLY think that Klitschko would struggle against THIS guy?
