It's probably happened numerous times in a boxing fans time but which springs to your mind as most dissappointing? A few I can recall are tyson v spinks. Was anticipating this for months. Totally bought in to the theory that Spinks would be tyson s toughest match! Floyd v pac man another fight that didn't live up to expectations. Riddick bowes career had a feeling of could have done more. Just a couple there but sure there's boat loads more.
Oh crap mcvey, I'd forgotten about that one. And yes, what a let down to. I was taken in by David haye totally. The aggressive trash talk in the build up, the shirts with klitschko s heads. Everything said this was going to be a classic!! And then the actual fight.. David haye went so down in my eyes after that. All that crap about his toe!!
Another one is holyfield vs Douglas. I'd followed holy career building up to that fight and expected him to be pushed to the limits against buster. I mean this was Douglas the giant slayer. It had to be a great fight..
About Haye/Klitschko, not only was it a terrible fight but what made it worse was the money I lost on the fight not going the distance. Only 50 bucks but still, after the fight build-up,I was sure that someone would be knocked out. Am having the same feeling about the upcoming Joshua/Klitschko fight but so far have resisted the temptation.
Mayweather vs Pacquiao was a fight that came 5 years too late. Imagine if the fought after the Hatton destruction. Could have been a all time classic.
Leonard vs Duran 3 was so dull and unexpectedly uneventful that the most memorable thing about it was the image of Ray being wrapped up in a blanket between rounds because it was a chilly outdoor night. After around the mid rounds, it was the fans that were saying 'No mas'!
We've been burnt once to often when it comes to big heavy weight fight s, that's probably the reason for the lower expectations. I'm feeling much the same. Just hoping proved wrong and it's a classic!
Fully agree with you,Fergy. Tyson-Spinks was billed as the most important heavyweight title bout since the first Ali-Frazier match seventeen years previously but ,as we know, the former matched up to the hype but the latter did n't by a long way. Riddick Bowe was a massive underachiever and Floyd-Pac Man was a yawn.
To right Stevie. Get that feeling when watching bowe in 92 winning the title in that classic, that it was such a waste of potential. Obviously he had mental health problems at the back end and he had to get out of the sport for a while, but such a short period of time from top of the division to the golata wars.
Fight: Haye V Klitschko was awful. Fighter: Odlanier Solis he had everything he needed to be one of the best ever.
He certainly had the appetite! Unfortunately it was mainly for food rather than for hard work and success.
I never got the Solis hype never looked any great shakes as a pro, no dedication or heart. The most disappointing fights I have watched in my time are Haye vs both Vlad and Harrison where very poor. May Pac - 5 years to late robbed the fans of a potential classic Hatton May - Ref ruined what was an entreating match up for me, I don't think there is any doubt over who would have won the fight but seeing the ref get more camera time than the fighters just ruined the fight for me.
