As someone has already pointed out, a long rangy southpaw. That was all you needed to know really.
Rickys main offense is stepping in with the jab. Thats a struggle for anyone against a real rangy southpaw.
This turned out to be a nightmare for ricky but one he had to take.

 

He got a unification fight at home in front of 8000 people, the promoter did his job in securing a big and meaningful fight which I'm sure he got well paid for. The rest is up to Burns and his team and they were 2nd best, it is what it is, can't blame Hearn.

 

After Eddie's read this, are you expecting any slots on Matchroom shows Billy?

 

And if you look at what Eddie has said, Burns made the choice to fight Indongo. It is what he wanted.

 

I’m a long term lurker here and an absolute casual. I’ve watched boxing on TV since I was a kid, but I’d be fibbing if I said I knew what I was talking about. I guess I’m the guy Eddie and Sky pitch at with the nonsense PPVs (although, I didn’t go in for Clev V Bellew, I’m not that daft).


I was moved to post to disagree with Mr. Nelson. I’m sure you have forgotten many hundreds of times more about the game than I will ever know, but this is surely madness? People (quite legitimately) give Hearn all kinds of grief for matching prospects in hugely one sided contests on 'stacked' cards, and the general perception of boxing is that it’s a minefield full of ‘world champions’, protected fighters with inflated records, people avoiding live opponents and cards designed to milk the casual fan (erm, me).


A well respected world champion was offered the chance to unify some of the belts in a fight of proper legitimacy. At home, live on TV. It could have been one of his finest nights. I don’t care if the opponent is a 100-0 all-time great; surely we want and expect our ‘champions’ to step up and take that fight in a heartbeat? Isn’t that what it should all be about? I don’t care that he’s a southpaw and ‘all wrong’ for Ricky, I don’t care if he’s supposed to be at a crap level (although - if Burns and team did not properly prepare for a world championship unification contest because they were told the opponent was rubbish, that speaks badly of them, surely?). We want our fighters to face stern tests and do their best, not retire on 60-0 having fought no-one with a pulse that might put up the slightest challenge. Ricky went for it all and lost – there is no shame in that, and good on Eddie for putting the fight on. I want to see much more of this, rather than less. Don’t we all?


Anyway. I like Ricky and hope he bounces back. Good luck to you, Billy, in all future endeavours. I just don’t agree with you here as a fan.

 

Hi Billy, I find your arguments laughable tbh. a world class fighter which is what you claim Ricky to be should be able to adapt to different styles and also to adapt on his own without instruction just with his own experience. was training against southpaws something you regularly did in the gym? or was it all 'left on left' like I mentioned in my previous post that you never replied too

also you were still part of his team when the switch from frank to Eddie happened, as his coach didn't you think to judge your proposed promotors boxing knowledge etc before getting your charge to sign up with him

look billy what you and Ricky achieved was special, I doubt you will ever reach those heights again as Scotland just doesn't have the talent pool and backing to achieve this on a more regular basis. but please don't try blaming Eddie Hearn for getting Ricky opportunities like Saturday because that is what the promotors job is to get opportunities for his fighter. it is then up to his coaching team to get him ready for that challenge and neither you or tony sims have managed to address rickys lack of ring iq when boxing a southpaw, simples

 

He hasn't signed Indongo. He has a promotional right to work with him in his next fight and he can use that to possibly set up a fight with anyone in his stable. He also has a rematch clause in there but Ricky has not earned it with his performance

Basically from this thread, you are slating Eddie because he put Burns in with a tough opponent for a unification bout. Unifications are not supposed to be easy. You also said that Burns could have fought someone else for 4 times the purse - I highly, highly doubt that is the case.
