Carnera or Bowe? This poll is pretty self-explanatory. This poll is not about head-to-head or career legacy/greatness but rather about their overall abilities, talent, skill, etc. It's a spin-off of our discussion in the Baer-Bowe thread.
Bowe was the better fighter head to head, but Carnera was the better all-round technician. Bowe was a very good infighter. Carnera was good on the inside, good on the outside, and good anywhere between.
Carnera was better. He had 85" reach. He was very rangey with his jab and double jab. And used head and upper body movement to play more with range and distance to utilize his 85" reach. He knocked out more than twice as many people as Bowe. He stopped every big man he fought excluding 280lb Campolo whom he stopped on points. His combos are similar to Bowe in technique and power. Carnera has far better mobility. This is the greatest discrepancy between the two. Bowe plods, and occasionally uses an explosive rush of an attack during the round. Primo is constantly moving around the ring, cutting the other fighter off or creating angles for his 85" jab. His footwork, mobility, and ring generalship are way ahead. Bowe is tighter on defense than Primo. He does have spurts of really good mobility with his jab, he is good at absorbing and blocking punches. He fights well in the pocket, and fights smart under pressure, and is good at smothering from many angles. In conclusion, I ask you to imagine what it would look like if you were able to see Carneras 70 KOs on film, as opposed to the 2-3 we currently have.
Hard to judge a guy who's career was largely made up of fixed fights, though I'd say he's closer to being better than Wladimir Klitschko than he is to Bowe. No contest, Bowe.
Show me footage where Bowe shows better outside skills than Carnera in the second Sharkey fight. Go for it!
