As I mentioned before, if Sharkey for whatever reason, had decided to go into the tank by catching the first decent looking punch coming his way wouldn't it help his case enormously if he reacted in the way that he did? What was Sharkey a stand up boxer of ability, doing ducking and crouching so much putting himself in harms way for uppercuts? Several posters have given unbiased and objective opinions in which they have said because Carnera's body blocks our view of the punch they cannot determine whether it was a fist or a forearm that landed on Sharkey. I find that to be an eminently reasonable position to take. Anyone stating they are certain that it was a fist, just don't want to entertain the possibility that they maybe mistaken and therefore wrong. Too much ego on the line? Or wilful refusal to acknowledge the possibility that they are wrong? Personally I think there is a hard core here who just cannot accept that anyone can hold a different viewpoint to their own and so they have to be insulted and derogated. No matter, some of us will stand by our opinions.
I don't like saying it mate, as I'm not a boxer putting my health on the line, but it did happen in this era(fixed). Perhaps I'm looking to deep but I feel his head coming up looked exaggerated as said over the years. Just my opinion mate
You have made the fatal error of disagreeing with him.Careful ,or he will stalk your posts! I advise appeasement, its too late for me, I am," a dead man walking", but you may still save yourself if you make an act of contrition!
Do you men like this when huge puncher Foreman lifts Frazier up ,off his feet? This content is protected LOL
The definitive post that we have been waiting for ! At the post fight press conference Sharkey said he wished to thank the entire cast ,the director, and his Mom and Dad!
I got hit with an uppercut by Tony Scott, 6'3" 226lbs ,he lifted me off my feet, and damn near launched me into orbit!
If it was filmed for television these days we'd get a decent angle. I can assume the fist landed but I can't even start to judge how and where it landed and whether Sharkey's reaction to it is "fishy" or not. Lots of old films are like that. We don't really see it. Strangely, I'm not sure I've ever seen a 100% satisfactory angle of the Tyson-Spinks final punch. The best I saw was from Tyson's back and it's slightly obscured. Sometimes camera fails to get the whole picture we'd like.
Sincere question: Can you guys think of many other fights where a bent over boxer took a hard uppercut to the face that stood him straight up before causing to fall unconscious? Great post.
Don't have an opinion on the ko but I disagree with this completely. From everything I've seen, taking a dive was considered far, far more dishonorable than getting knocked out cold.
When you fight someone so much larger a skilled hwt will try to get low forcing the bigger man to come down to his size in order to land a blow. I see no reason to conclude the bout was fixed. Sharkey was being manhandled prior to the ko.
I've always thought that was odd ,and I've seen tons of ko's , a ko caused by an uppercut means they usually pitch face forward .Glad I'm not alone on that!
The set up to the punch on Sharkey's side is a bit odd, as I mentioned earlier. Bouncing off the ropes into a duck and holding the ducked position is a bit WWE. Maybe he was just tired though.
