Has the heavyweight division ever been more exciting?

Joshua appears to be a bit over-muscled for elite championship boxing. He's got a ton of talent, tho.

 

I think it's time we all agree that Wlads chin problems are extremely exaggerated. He took an ungodly beating and was still in there until the last moment.

His right hand is also among the best in history. He pulled it out of nowhere in the sixth and Joshua looked like a shotgun hit him.

All the luck to Joshua but I don't think he's going far. His stamina is just a massive problem - he gassed out after a few combos in the fifth and looked like he was on the verge of dying. I was shocked. Any competent heavyweight that isn't 41 years old and wobbly/tired himself would have destroyed him right then and there. The engine is great but he doesn't have the fuel to keep it going. It's gonna hurt him sooner rather than later.

My 2 cents.

 

Nobody can ever say again that Wlad was never involved in a great fight, or that he lacks heart.

That will go down in history alongside Ezard Charles's losing performance against rocky Marciano!

This is one of the more exciting heavyweight fights in a long time.

Joshua is obviously the real deal.

He is going to be the main man in the division, give or take the odd upset!

It sounds like both fighters raised their stock. No shame in the loss for Wlad at his age and activity, that's the way the when you are in there with an elite talent in his prime ( which Joshua has now proven ) on almost all occasions in history.

I would not say Joshua will rule for a long time as it sounded like his stamina was an issue, perhaps more so than his chin was, but he's the clear #1 now, beating Wlad motivated at the best his body would allow at age 41.

I think Wlad should retire. He was a very consistent and classy man, dominating the division for a decade.

 

This was exactly what heavyweight boxing needed! Another clinchfest like against Povetkin would have been unbearable. I hope Wlad now retires... and if he does, he can go out with his head held high.

As a example , Marciano/Louis ,Tyson/Holmes or Clay/Liston did not have to get off the canvas to put a mummy down for good and were in 100% control of the fight til the end.

Agreed! All I could think about from rounds 5-8 were all the strength footage I've seen on him.
He should and probably will refine his priorities in training.

I am a big time wlad fan and he did me proud in defeat making up for the poor fury performance

still don't know if I'd say it's my best live experience

joshua just carried his power through till the 11th to knock out one of the greats and we're questioning his stamina?

now i agree he could lose some of that upper body mass but i think he answered more tonight than he left in limbo.

 

I don't know man, in retrospect I probably grew up in the worst era of boxing.
It was mostly Manny and Mayweather fights that I recall.

If I hadn't known its history, I would've thought the sport was going out the door. But because I knew the history, I could see a pattern of valleys and peaks, and was very optimistic that there would be a resurgence.
And it's finally happening.

 

He was in serious trouble from 6-8. Even when Wlad was getting tanked, he was using his jab beautifully.
AJ was recovering his energy, while Wlad had to use everything to stay competitive and in control.

 

agreed. but i think its a big jump to blame that on stamina and not the hurting wlad was putting on him.
