Boxing history has a few: fighters who accomplished most everything with just one hand, the other being used rarely or not terribly effectively, yet reaching the top or nearly doing so. Here are a few that come to mind: John Conteh: Could do it all with his left hand - jab, hook, double up either. Also had good wheels so he could move in and out, but gave Matthew Saad Muhammad fits with that left and nearly pulled off the title upset. Yaqui Lopez: Another fighter who was left-hand reliant, less so than Conteh as he used his right hand more often, but piled up points with the jab and hook and also came every so close to winning a title on more than one occasion. Virgil Hill: Completely left-hand reliant, yet had a really good run as a champ at 175 without ever getting much mileage out of his right. Interestingly, all three of those are light heavyweights. Ingemar Johansson: Became a heavyweight champ with the right hand that he named 'Toondar' - that's how he pronounced it, I think, althought we'd probably say Thunder. Pawed with the left and the right seemed to throw itself. Those are the main ones I can think of - who else you got?
Joe Frazier, Gerry Cooney and Cyclone Hart are almost exclusively known for their left hooks. Obviously these fighters had more to their makeup, but it does hang out there on them. Also, Bummy Davis and Henry Cooper come to mind. I think I saw an interview with Coop who said something like 'my right hand was only there to wipe the sweat from my brow', or something like that. But again, there was more to their makeup.
Oscar De La Hoya was very left hand dominant. The Fernando Vargas fight was one in which he used it well, particularly in round 8. DLH throughout his career was inconsistent with the use and effectiveness of the right hand. Relative to the excellent career he had, he had a lousy right hand.
Tommy Morrison Pipino Cuevas Tony Sibson Tony Baltazar These fighters left hooks was there bread and butter and destroyed many a fighter.
Conteh was a terrific two handed puncher with a great right cross but he kept injuring his right hand, and had to rely on his left. This content is protected One handed fighters would have to include Henry Cooper!
Schmeling wasn't a one handed fighter he worked behind his jab to set up the right.Wlad has excellent power in both hands, very fine jab and left hook and a killer right cross,Tua had a very good right hand he ko'd Moorer with it, so that's 3 out of 3 you got wrong !!!
Razor had a formidable right hand as well, he knocked out plenty with it. He's just known for his left handed Smash because it's such a devastating punch.
Joey Maxim - very durable light-heavy champ who often fought heavyweights yet was known as a left-dominant, relatively light hitter in spite of his successes.
Conteh seems very underappreciated to me. Excellent fighter in his prime. I enjoy going back and watching his fights. I used to tell young guys in the gym to youtube Conteh.
