The guy has poor technique, but he's big. Make him 6'1 and 190 lbs and he wouldn't last one round against Joshua.

Just try it in sparring. Fighting like Fury or Vitaly is one thing against smaller opponents and another against bigger. And the faster and more skilled the opponent is, the more difficult it gets.

That's why that kind of style is primarily used by big HWs.

Some of these techniques are good for 20 or more round bouts...defensive and countering..the pre 20 fighters just needed more combos and head moves..but not too much as it tires..they had a lot of everything else with good body punching...then the twenties came and out went anything over 15 rounds

Fury has good technique. He's unorthodox, he's not textbook.
You don't get to be heavyweight champion of the world with poor technique unless you have exceptional power (and even then you'd need technique enough to land).
Fury doesn't even have exceptional power.

What did you make of Leon Spinks power and technique?

Power wasn't great for a heavyweight. I suppose he made up for that with volume.
    His technique was good.

Leaning back and rotating the hips forward is actually a solid stance with the right feet placement.
Not sure why that stance went out of favour. Maybe it's not the best in terms of launching an offensive but it seems a good option for defensive-minded boxers.

There was a clip a while back of Fitzsimmons doing the exact same thing for a few seconds.
Needless to say, it was ill received.

Leon won the gold medal at HW in the Montreal Olympics ('72).

he was also trained by his brother, Michael for his championship fight vs Ali.

    his technique was solid

If you think it's solid, then try it against a taller opponent with some quality.

If you're big you can become champion with relatively poor technique. If Fury had had a substantial disadvantage in height and reach against Wlad, he'd be smoked fighting like that.

I urge everybody that thinks it's a good idea to lean back from punches with hands low tro try it sparring against a speedy opponent that's taller than you and have a longer reach. Someone who's just as fast and good as you are, but just taller with longer reach.

IT IS A VERY DIFFICULT THING TO DO IF YOU DON'T HAVE SUBSTANTIAL ADVANTAGES IN SIZE AND/OR SPEED. The modern textbook style will serve you much better.

Why? It may not be the best stance for that opponent.
It was obviously a solid stance, hence why boxers used it for years.
