I don't think this has anything to do with the Checkhook debate, and its already been noted that fighters used the Philly shell style way before Mayweather and Toney. But since Reznick hasn't, would you care to describe what you consider to be the core components/requirements of the Philly shell?
This is a pretty good analysis of it: https://www.ianstreetz.com/single-p...es-7-The-Crouching-Crab-Crab-and-Philly-Shell The Philly Shell stance is essentially having your lead hand cover your body, your lead shoulder guarding your chin from one side, with your power hand guarding your chin from the other side. http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2011/fn5/4200738/541A0001_1_FN_BOXER_PORTRAIT_KOW.jpg
Why? It's like asking what someone considers to be a "right cross" Google it. There are countless articles, write ups, demonstrations pictures, drawings,..what have you. The point is that Lee Savold was using a defensive technique to negate damage.
I ask because the vast majority of writeups I've found via google, consistent with my previous understanding of the Philly shell technique, place a heavy emphasis on rolling one's front shoulder to avoid damage.
Do you agree with the author, that Floyd Mayweather actually doesn't use the Philly shell? How many hits, if any, did you scroll past before finding a writeup of the Philly shell that didn't mention shoulder leans or rolls? (honest question--no shade).
I'll admit I'd never heard of the philly shell before the last 5 or 10 years on the internet. Or more recent than that perhaps. Whatever it is, I don't think it's a boxing fundamental like a right cross. I always though "shell" defense was a crouch with both arms high, cross arms type of thing. Y'know, like a turtle shell kinda thing.
It's similar. Also there are no strict definitions, and the nature of boxing is such that it's not always black and white. You could have slight alterations to common stances.
What percentage of the time though? I saw way more instances of him doing other stuff, in the parts of the clip that I checked out.
Did you? "So without further ado let us examine some styles and debunk the myth that Mayweather does the Philly Style." "Benny Briscoe and Joe Frazier demonstrate what can be considered the true Philly Shell in that they demonstrate: 1. A more frontal approach. 2. A more aggressively facilitated stance. 3. Heavily reliant on ducking, rolling and bending at the waist. If we consider these aspects as integral parts of the Philly Style, one thing becomes clearly apparent; that is the defence exhibited by Floyd Mayweather Jr is not in fact the Philly shell at all. If Floyd Mayweather Jr himself who is widely considered the face of the Philly Style doesn't even do the Philly Style then what the hell does he do, I hear you ask."
Provide a source that states the rules of the Philly Shelly is determined by the percentage of time you use the shoulder roll. I would assume like most things in boxing it's situational, but maybe you got a secret source somewhere that says otherwise.
Joe Frazier, that makes sense. Bent over, small target, arms high and often wrapped. Like a shell. And he's Philly. Toney and Mayweather probably use the Michigan Roll or something.
