I am a boxing manager: if you have questions about the boxing biz, ask!

Hypothetical question. let's say a 25 year old man has no future in any type of career, no college degree, can't join the military, can't join the police or fire department, can't even get hired at a mcdonalds or toysrus because hes overqualified somehow. he is very skilled at boxing though and does very well in sparring but has no amateur fights but needs to get money to feed himself. would it be hard to or out of the question to get him a boxing license and to actually get fights?

 

Depending of where you live you should be able to get some amatuer fights, if not I reccommend traveling. I am a Trainer with alot of experience now getting into management. I know several fighters who started boxing late 23-26 who had a limited amatuer career HOWEVER they where college athletes with athletic ability.I recommend getting a trainer and have some amatuer fights to see where your at. Dempsey I have a question for you. I am a trainer with a few amatuer fighters in a high stakes boxing area. I recently got my managers license and plan to start signing fighters as manager/trainer. My question is once they are 18 can I sign them while they are still and amatuer. Reason being I live in a high stakes boxing area with alot of gyms/trainers/managers etc and we both know fighters arent loyal. I contacted the boxing commission and there answer was "hmmm I dont know"lol

 

Yes I am a father figure for the most part and I agree with lessoning the fight contract. Let me just tell you the area I am in there are alot of Managers/Promoters/Trainers that do what i call Gym shop. They send fighters in there to do it as well. There are many gyms with World Champs so its tempting for a fighter to leave. I am a little guy whos confident in my ability to breed a fighter properly. Ive worked with many top ranked and even world champion professionals. That being said I always out for the best interest of my fighter.

 

I couldn't agree more, I have always kept a small stable 3-5 fighters due to the fact I am 1 person who works full time and cant train everyone. I take it VERY serious and only train serious fighters who put the work in. Many trainers dont give s sh*t or dont know what there doing. Ive had National Golden Glove Champions, Silver Glove Champions etc. I am very knowledgeable about the business however am just starting to get into the Pros. Ive had offers to work in Pro stables but turned it down since Im trying to build my own stable.

Also the only way to get Professional fights is:

1) Your a seasoned amatuer with an impressive resume.
2) You can sell enough tickets to cover your purse AND your opponents purse.
3) Your just a "Meat man" the promoter just uses you expecting you to lose to build up another fighter. Which is common but after a certain amount of losses the commission will make it harder for the matchmaker to make the bout. Where Im from the State Athletic Commission is tough on certain bouts. For example Ive seen them turn down a bout where a guy was 2-9 and the other guy was 8-0, they said you have to find someone with a 500 record in order to make the bout. HOWEVER if you upset a prospect the phone will be ringing!!

Anyone see the Brook v Spence fight at the weekend.I have gone on record before as really rating Spence and he went over to the UK and really turned the heat up on Brook and deserved his win and world title.He is a very talented operator coming into his prime years.

Thing is I rated Brook highly also thought he may be able to just win a decision on points with the home crowd behind him.My nagging doubt was not just the fact Brook had to do a 16 week camp to get to 147 lb.

My other nagging doubt was his previous fight,what were his manager and promoter thinking.It wasn't long term,it was a quick payday.They should of built on the superb performance against Porter they didn't.

You don't take a career WW and move him up two weight classes against one of the best P4P fighters in the world and honestly think you are going to get anything but a payday but at what cost...broken eye socket and long recuperation.

You then drop back down two weight classes and at 31 when you are struggling to boil down to WW you are really playing with fire...and a fighters health.

Too big for WW too small for MW the answer all too obvious but in this case true lies in the middle...154 lb.

What happened and everyone it seems I have read from the 'experts' talked of course about the other eye socket which Brook has fractured it seems.Awful for him and another long layoff and to me he should think about calling it a day.Spence done the hard yards in the fight by breaking Brook down with body shots.Weakness at the weight test the body,old school.

Options a Khan fight which would happen two or three years too late,not for me both are way past their peaks.
His options could of been different he was offered the GGG fight and a couple of million.He should have had someone telling him what could happen and has panned out.

You don't jump two weight classes against the best in the division without someone talking through at what it could cost.Madness.
