Overlooked in what way Rob? He has an enormous reputation and the vast majority of lists i've seen have him down as the greatest Bantamweight ever. Ring mag had him 19th greatest fighter of the last 80 years which made him the highest ranked bantam.
I guess what I mean is a rarely c him mentioned here. Now sometimes I disappear for months at a time so maybe I miss things but generally I dont c his name brought up much
He used to be talked about often here when the old brigade was fully around, they/we loved him. He was a fave of a few prominent posters so was often in the mix. I don't think i've seen him mentioned since i've been back.
The medel fights are great. Pretty much anything pre Harada is good. Sometimes the legra fight shows up and that's past peak but legra was a miniature ali. Jofre is losing handily and then gets dropped and just wakes up. He is a very technical guy, a wicked body puncher, who never seemed to make mistakes. Like a lot of punch perfect guys (Lopez, Louis) you could crowd him although he was much better than either guy up close. It took an atg like harada to do it and both those fights were real close.
There isn't a lot of film of Jofre in his prime. And he was a bantam weight. Perhaps the best bantam weight of all time.
Robert, if you get a chance to see the first fight with Jose Medel, check out the 9th round. On an old thread years ago a question was asked about the greatest round 1, the greatest round 2, etc. I put in Jofre-Medel I for the greatest round 9. You'll love it.
I agree that Jofre isn't mentioned that much...I really like Olivares...but Jofre just may be the best of all time...It's hard for me to pick anyone over the version that stopped Rose though...just sayin'...
****ing great video, Al. Thanks a million. Always thought EJ had the coolest boxing name ever as well lol.
