At least that's the sense I get from viewing some of Nacho Beristain's interviews. Nacho has observed that Canelo gets impatient and is thrown off the gameplan when the distance is not there for him. Keeping distance and playing defense with swivel movements are what Nacho has been working with Chavez on. I still favor the Canelo over a fighter that's been undisciplined for to long, but things can get mighty interesting and very complicated for Canelo if Chavez is able to keep distance and score off the jab from there in the early going. I'm interested in seeing how the fight will play out if Chavez is able to bank the early rounds fighting at distance, seeing that most experts expect Canelo to use his speed to win those rounds. It may come down to a scenario where the smaller Canelo may have to become the hunter. What do you all think?
Interesting, hadn't thought of a strategy where Canelo has to come to Chavez. I'd always thought of this fight as Chavez attacking and trying to wear the smaller man down. You have proposed a very thoughtful strategy. I don't know if Chavez is a good enough boxer but making Canelo lead could be a winner, sort of an aggressive counter puncher.
Divac, are you a fan of my beloved Raiders? I see Plunkett as your sign! I'm wearing my Raiders road hat
I can see this strategy working well for Chavez given his physical dimensions, but like Nacho I am concerned that he will be too macho for his own good and revert to a more aggressive style at some point in the fight.
It was much earlier in his career and the name of the fighter doesn't come to mind right now, but Chavez won a fight where a lot of fans thought he lost, at the very least he didn't look very good in, but when they rematched, Chavez used distance and dominated that same guy. He did it vs Brian Vera as well, boxed well from distance. I've seen Jr. employ that gameplan and be successful at it. Nacho is saying its going to be a complicated night for Canelo if Chavez sticks to the plan. That tells me Chavez has been employing those distance tactics to good effect in training camp. When Humberto "Chiquita" Gonazales was knocked out by Michael Carbajal, Nacho devised a gameplan for Chiquita that most didn't have a clue Chiquita a puncher could follow. Chiquita ran circles around Carbajal and never let him get set to punch with power, Chiquita easily winning that rematch. Don't think Nacho is going to have Chavez fight at a gameplan he doesn't think can play dividends for him. Keeping distance might just work for Chavez as Canelo plods forward like his feet are stuck in cement. Canelo just has very slow foot movement. Going to be very interesting. .......and yeah, my first memories of football was Jim Plunkett dissecting the Philadelphia Eagles in a Superbowl victory. Big fan of Jim Plunkett, whether that man was winning or at rock bottom, he always held his head up high like in the avatar I sport in this forum. Been a huge fan of the Raiders ever since.
I'm getting more and more confident in the upset. Chavez Jr is looking like he will make weight and apparently he has looked very good in the gym. I just want to see Oscars face is Chavez Jr beats his baby up.
I posted this very thing a few weeks ago for being Jrs road to success. Keep distance early working behind the jab and look to land shots to the body. Do this for the first half of the fight and in about the 8th round put the pressure on canelo and wear him down with the size advantage and look for the ko. This could work for jr.
Jr needs a KO, he won't win on the cards even if he pitches a shut out. I can't see this strategy playing out TBH, Jr needs to make it a fire fight and show Canelo he's the boss.
I would think that what Nacho wants to avoid is to have Jr. chasing from the outset and have Canelo get into a sharp shooting comfort zone benefiting from Jrs. aggression. If you have Jnr on the backfoot scoring from distance, that very well may leave Canelo no choice but to come forward in an attempt to close the distance. If it turns into a firefight because of it, that to may benefit Chavez Jr. as he's the bigger man who likely will be able to withstand and take more in that type of fight than Canelo. If the fight is close going into the last few rounds, I think Mexican pride will take over and they're going to throw down. A possible fight of the year candidate if that happens.
I think that sounds very plausible,Canelo looked mighty good in his last fight from round one he came out the traps hard
I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing. We know that Canelo is at his best against a fighter coming at him, and that's what Jr does. He struggles against technical fighters on the backfoot though, but I can't see Chavez Jr move and counter effectively. And then, Chavez Jr can't let it go to the cards, because it's Canelo he's fighting. He has to dominate him (which he can't) or knock him out, and he probably won't stop him without relentless pressure.
That's he's plan well "Nachos " but will fail because that's not he's style and is not fast enough on his feet.
