That's a good post, and I want to make it clear that I'm not writing Toney off. What I'm saying is, that AT 160, I favour Golovkin (ie- think he would be more likely to win) but that opinion isn't of the sort that runs along the fanatical lines of, oh, I don't know, THIS: "Golovkin wouldn't even have a puncher's chance against an ironed chinned fighter like James Toney. Just a different level." which is laughable. For reference, I'm watching Sanderline Williams, who was on a seven fight losing streak (punctuated by wins over total cans) holding his own with Toney. What I will say is that Golovkin would have to bring his A game for Toney and he wouldn't be able to swing for the fences at will, because James WOULD totally slip those and punish him back. But I reckon if Gena based his fight off the jab, which he usually does against the top raters, he'd likely win. Another thing to consider is that Toney's inconsistency at MW likely stems from ill-discipline out of camp and difficulty from weight cutting. On the one hand that explains his sucky performances. On the other hand it creates more weight in favour of Golovkin, who is a natural 160 guy and very well disciplined outside of camp.
Okay, well I could also say that Brook, two weight classes down, was touching GGG up. Imagine what Toney would do. If you're going to talk about the best versions, talk about that. Toney's skillset is tailored to counter basic fighters. Trying to come with that basic one-two against Toney would earn GGG a hard counter right.
Golovkin stated from the outset that he was going to turn it into a streetfight. And he did. He put the guy into hospital. What more do you want? You must be confusing Golovkin with Klitschko. GGG is the little guy that throws every punch in the book. Klitschko is the big 1-2 guy.
GGG can box! I see his punch selection catching Toney unawares at times. I said Toney by decision earlier in the thread , I still now, but its close fight the more I think about it. I don't think GGG is the same fighter he was 3/4 years ago. His pressure has lessened, hes slowing up. I know his last 2 fights have been against better comp, but I sussed it before
I really think Toney was better at higher weights. He had a lot of close and controversial fights at MW. This wouldn't be an easy fight for either of them.
Again, you need to an*lyse an awful lot of things before you put forward your opinion. You can't just pick out single fights. It would be akin to saying that GG would easily have beaten Eubank Snr, as Eubank struggled with the likes of Ray Close, and GG is a level above a guy like that. It doesn't work like that. That's too simplistic. Regarding Nunn, he was a great fighter at that point. He was a rangy southpaw, with a long reach, and he had great technical ability. It was no shame in being down on the cards. I'll be objective and say that if you had a time machine and you put GG in the place of Toney's other opponents, he'd have had a real chance of winning. But in fantasy fights, it's always better to assume that both guys were at their absolute best. Until I see more of GG, I'd have choose James at this point. I'm a big fan of GG's, but he's still yet to face an elite MW.
I honestly can't see how toney at his best at 160 would struggle much against GGG. His defense was on point, his offense was sensational, his chin was Granite, I think Toney would outclassed GGG any day of the week and twice on sunday!
