Ward offered 50/50 at 168, and GGG countered with 50/50 at 164.

What it boils down to is neither man felt like taking the short money so they offered terms they knew the other wouldn't accept. Sucks for us, but since they've each made millions since then, it's hard to argue with their stance.

I don't see it that way. Just like Golovkin was unwilling to fight Canelo at a CW, and rightfully so, Ward was not going to fight Golovkin at a CW, and rightfully so.

 

Totally. Both guys have made asses of themselves quite publicly. That in no way diminishes their motivation to be the consensus Mexican champion. They are both young men that wear their pride upon their sleeve. Good for them. War Mexico!

 

To me Chavez did not look near as bad as Canelo at the Floyd weigh in, I remember as soon as Red stepped off the scales he sat down immediately and grabbed a drink

Doesn't matter if any of us agree or not. These guys are businessmen as well as pugilists. The reason neither compromised is that neither had to.

Money talks. When it gets loud enough for them to budge, Ward-GGG could happen.

 

It's because Canelo had been used to making 154 for years, he was already straining himself just to maintain the weight and stay in the weight class of Jr Middleweight, so taking off 2 additional pounds from that was incredibly difficult.

Whereas Chavez was a 160 lb fighter, and gained weight to become a Super Middleweight. Due to Chavez's discipline issues and probably at one point not a strict diet caused him to be a weight class above what he was. So of course Canelo was more drained at 152 in 2013 than Chavez is today at 164, because Chavez went up 8 lbs since 2012, only to come down 4 lbs from that, so in total he's still a net 4-6 lbs more than he was used to weighing it at. Where as Canelo was asked to be 2 lbs less than he was at consistently.

The real comparison is who was more drained, Canelo at 152 in 2013 vs Floyd or Chavez at 158 in 2012 vs Martinez. It must have been more difficult for Canelo to make 152 than it was for Chavez to make 158 for Martinez, as Chavez made it all the way down to 158 voluntarily when all he had to be was 160 or below.

When you consider that Chavez managed to come in at 158 for Martinez, it's kind of ridiculous to say that him making 164.5 is unreasonable when his opponent is moving up 10 lbs from 154. I mean it's not like Canelo was asking him to weigh anywhere close to what he did vs Martinez, he's 6 lbs bigger than he was vs Martinez. Chavez was able to make this weight somewhat comfortably. I also think that Canelo had a difficult time making 154 for Liam Smith, not as difficult as 152 for Floyd, but still difficult nonetheless, because he was consistently making 155 since the Floyd fight, so he had gotten used to making that, and for Smith had to shed an additional pound from what his target had been.

It's going to be very interesting to see what Canelo will be like in the ring tomorrow after for the first time in his career not having to really struggle or drain himself to make weight at the weigh-in. Will he be more sluggish by carrying more weight, will he lose some of his speed and elusiveness, or will he be stronger and actually have more stamina since he didn't have to drain himself. Or will he just be the usual Canelo. Some will argue that if Canelo has to make 160 in the future (as opposed to being able to cruise into 164.5) that may actually force him to be more disciplined and possibly result in him being in better shape. Surely Chavez fans are hoping that the additional weight could make Canelo more sluggish, could take something off his speed, but it could also make Canelo stronger and an even bigger puncher, which is scary. We're not gonna have to wait long to find out.

 

Anybody else thinking Canelo looked a little bulky, I'm not saying he looked bad, he looked very good but he has definitely added muscle.

So could there be a problem for him with extra muscle? Could it slow him? Could there be fatigue with the build up of more lactic acid?

Has all the talk about Chavez making weight distracted some of us from the fact Canelo is actually going up in weight and will be carrying extra muscle?
