So over the past few weeks, we have all been subjected to endless posts and threads which pretty much make the same point with regards to HW boxers: taller and heavier = better. I of course, understand this premise and, in a sport where we have weight divisions for a reason, agree with it up to a point. Yes, the taller, heavier boxer will have a natural advantage. But not to the exclusion of all other factors. The boxing equation is much more complex than that. However, if you argue Joshua beats any boxer who is significantly smaller or lighter and rely on his size advantage as the the dominant aspect of your case, you also have to argue the same regarding Valuev vs AJ. So over to you 'size matters' apologists, make your case for Valuev winning...
Valuev specializes in the Queen's Gambit and often uses it to develop board position against opponents in the mid game. His Sicilian Defence is also sound and he plays well under pressure. Joshua is still working out en passant. Case closed.
I'm glad you brought chess into this thread, it highlights the cerebral aspect of all forms of combat..... And I knew you'd be a chess player somehow...
I doubt people are talking purely about size, I guess the mode of thinking here is good big guy generally beats good smaller guy. A behemoth like Taishan Dong isnt considered a threat because he doesn't have the skills or game changing power to match his frame.
A good big guy wins against a good small guy, that is the way of thinking and not that an average big fighter like Valuev can beat a highly skilled super heavyweight like Anthony Joshua, people in this forum understand not even the concept of weight classes. Anthony Joshua would obliterate Valuev.
Valuev isnt a normally proportioned athletic puncher, obviously there is a limit to which size is an advantage and the limit is around 6'7 250 ish. Anything taller or bigger than that is no longer that much of an advantage because it is so far outide of the biological norm for a human that its almost like a deformity or condition that will get in the way. But up to that, bigger=is better with all else being equal. Horrible Horrible example
Sadly I haven't really played chess in years. I was huge on it as a kid though. I had to Google what elo meant ... now I feel all inadequate I once punched another kid in the mouth because he adjusted his pieces too many times. Does that count for something?
This would be a 70-30 fight in favor of AJ in my opinion, i have explained in the other thread about this fight why i think that AJ would win. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/alexander-povetkin-vs-anthony-joshua-who-wins.586026/page-12
I agree it's an awful match-up but that's kind of my point. Some on here focus solely on size to the detriment of all other factors and in that case they should argue Valuev wins. Or at least see a case for him winning. Height and weight matter, but as you rightly point out, other factors count too, so much so, they negate the size factor entirely...
