There have probably been many that were of a similar calibre over the years.

    Either way, ranked is ranked.
    Let’s say that he wasn't.

It still leaves us without a convincing win over a raked superheavyweight.

Even an Impellettiere would be better than nothing!

This is why we can't back Bowe very strongly here.

If you are so fond of quoting this sentence, then why do you not consider any of the positive things that Louis said about Carnera.

You can't cite one in your defence, but dismiss the other.

Tbh i think Golota would have always given him major problems but Golota is way underrated IMO. He had a weak mind/was plagued by anxiety attacks but Golota was very skilled.

What does this statement mean ? Impellettiere not only had ten fights but was a fourth rater who defeated no one. He likely count not have beaten Monte Masters .. the bar on this site really could not be much lower.

He seems to have got his ranking by beating Ford Smith, who was coming off wins over Dudy Baer and Art Lasky.

That made him a contender briefly.

His earlier win over Jose Santa would have made him at least a fringe contender.

We cannot assume his surviving professional record on Boxrec to be complete.

Why not? If you can't find any other fights we can! For f*ck's sake his career only covered 5 years!

Carnera was the shorter man in four fights that I am aware of, and all these men were at least fringe contenders.

Impelletiere fought Santa in his 5th fight, and Loughran in his 7th.

Why does a fringe contender from the 30's have a harder record than Wlad in his first 10 fights? :(

Are we going to keep comparing records from the 30's with records from the 90's as if the craft of matchmaking was 1 to 1?

They used to toss talented fighters and prospects in the ring against one another like it was nothing, bar some rare exceptions.
Today, there is a refined path to padding a contenders record.

Obviously I would favour Bowe, but my point is that there is a bit of a gap in his record, in terms of this type of fighter.

I am sorry but a lot of records form the 30s, and much later for that matter, are still incomplete.

Unless you can find a contemporary newspaper article outlining his previous record, we should consider the matter open.

And what has that to do with anything?

    The stylistic argument.

It suggests that he was not merely successful because he was big, and might have had success against big heavyweights from other eras.

My apologies, Impelletiere is believed to have other fights that do not show on his official record.

Impelletiere was outboxing him until he gassed.
